GOWANDA: BB gun creates anxious moments

Some Gowanda Elementary School pupils had a bit of a sour ending last week. During one of its bus runs, it was reported that there was a student found with a gun.

After an investigation by a slew of law enforcement –Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Seneca Nation Marshals and the village police — it was determined the weapon was a BB gun. In this era, that alone is reason enough for plenty of anxiety.

Gowanda police urged parents to speak with their children, especially over the long summer months, about the consequences that come with any type of weapon being brought to school. “We encourage you to have conversations with your children as this nationwide ‘trend’ has gone on far too long,” the Gowanda Police Facebook post said. “Be aware. Talk to your children and be vigilant as parents, and of course remind your children that if they see something, say something.”

All districts are on pins and needles when it comes to possible violence. Parents must not forget what happened in late June when the first day rolls around in September. These are serious times.
