POMFRET: No quick decision on fast motorists

Town of Pomfret officials heard this month from residents of Bear Lake. They voiced concerns regarding vehicles traveling over the 30 mph speed limit in the residential areas.

Now that summer has arrived, there is an urgency to slow drivers — who are coming from county roads that have 55 mph limits. “We’re just here because we’re concerned about the safety of the residents, their children and their grandchildren,” Bear Lake resident Roberta Belote said at this month’s Town Board meeting. “Many of us have called the state police and the Sheriff’s Department, but they’re busy and can’t always check. It’s a big county.”

One idea proposed by the town was a digital speed tracking sign to warn motorists of pedestrians. Members also floated the idea of having the sheriff’s office add more patrols to the area, but those may come at an additional cost.

For now, additional signs — noting to watch for children — are likely the best policy. In addition, those utilizing the lake need to continue to use additional caution.

Motorists are all too often in a hurry. That’s a problem for all pedestrians — not just those in Bear Lake.

Starting at $3.50/week.
