FIRE DISTRICT: Change never comes easy here

No matter where you get fire protection, there will be a high price. With a vote looming on Tuesday regarding the commissioners of the Bay Creek Fire District, there is a sentiment — as usual — that change is not good.

Last week, Hanover Center Fire Department sent a letter to residents that noted as of Jan. 1, it will no longer be the first responding department to emergency calls by residents north of King Road. All properties on the north side of King Road are now part of the Bay Creek Fire District, along with other properties from King Road to Routes 5 and 20 that were formerly in the Hanover Center Fire Department protection area. The new Bay Creek Fire District – made up of the Silver Creek and Sunset Bay departments – will be dispatched first.

In addition, Hanover Center stated in the letter, “You will also now be paying a rate increase of 45% more for fire protection. Not to mention, your fire insurance rating will change due to the additional distance from the fire departments with no water supply.”

This region has proven throughout the decades it is stubborn when new proposals come forward. Hanover Center is not wrong for its beliefs — members are dedicated to serving the community. But they were also part of the discussions that were taking place last spring in the town regarding the district. They decided to opt out.

North Lake Fire District, which is comprised of the former Dewittville, Hartfield and Mayville Fire Departments, has seen some successes and struggles. Overall, the sentiment has been that the group is stronger as one than being three separate entities.

As we all know, that is a tough message to get through to so many who believe the status quo has been working just great. Even though, history shows, it is not.

Starting at $3.50/week.
