The Steelers came back from a two-goal deficit to tie up a nailbiter with Batavia.
Ikaika Wojcinski scored both goals for the Steelers with the helpers from Kam Mages and Matt Lotter. Joe Newton had a strong game and Joey Yeager earned the team hard hat.

The Steelers took the early lead with an unassisted goal by Tate Olson, but failed to bury another after that.
Chris Waterman had a fine performance and Trevor Persch earned the team hard hat for his effort.

Both goals were scored in the first period as the Steelers and Lakers played to the tie at Steele Hall.
Jared Glowniak scored for the Steelers 20 seconds into the game. Michael Persch and Jonah Rosas had the assists.
Jamestown tied the game approximately five minutes later with Andrew Dix scoring the goal. Jadon Barron had the assist.
Nick Novelli was in goal for the Steelers and among his saves, he stopped a penalty shot in the second period.
Kaleb Bender was in goal for Jamestown. The Steelers are 6-7-2 in the league.

The Steelers defeated the Coyotes at Steele Hall. Jared Glowniak had two goals and one assist to lead the Steelers. Michael Persch and Ethan Brunner also scored for the Steelers. Gabe Persch and Jonah Rosas each had two assists. Nick Novelli was in goal.

The Stars scored four goals in the third period and remained undefeated in league play with the victory over the Steelers.

Skate with the Blue Devils set
The Fredonia State hockey team will hold its annual “Skate with the Blue Devils” on Friday, Jan. 3 from 6-7 p.m. at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
Hockey drills, skills, fun and games will be part of the event.
Admission is a canned good which will be donated to a local food bank.
Full equipment is required.

at Pair of Tournaments
Wrestling at the NYWAY North Tonawanda Tournament on Sunday, Dec. 22 were Dylan Houser, Austin Bourgeois, Cyrus Hurd, Martin Ohlsson, Will Quagliana, Mason Maring and Ceric Kristan.
Houser finished first in the 130-pound 11-12-year-old division while Bourgeois was second in the 110 11-12-year-old division. Also placing second were Hurd (55, 7-8-year-old division) and Ohlsson (60, 7-8-year-old division).
Coming in third place were Maring (85, 7-8-year-old division) and Quagliana (105, 13-14-year-old division). Kristan, wrestling at 90 pounds, was fourth in the 11-12-year-old division.
Wrestling at its first tournament, the Salamanca Winter Warmup, Westfield had two first-place, one second-place, two third-place and two fourth-place finishers.
Maring was first in the 6-under division while Houser was first at 130 pounds in the 11-12-year-old division. Kristan (90, 11-12-year old division) finished second while Jack Bourgeois (55, 7-8-year-old division) and Austin Bourgeois (110, 11-12-year old division) finished third. In fourth place were Hurd (55, 7-8-year-old division) and Damion Franklin (60, 7-8-year-old division).

BJ’s 7, Dom Polski 4 – Tom Coughlin had a pair of goals for BJ’s while Mark Zaffalon, Tom O’Connor Sr., Brian Wojcinski, Scott Wojcinski and Mike Nelson also scored.
Assists were credited to Brian Wojcinski (two), O’Connor, Ron Friend, Nelson and Jay Burnett. Greg Parker picked up the win between the pipes.
Scoring for Dom Polski were Chris Messina, Devin Carlson, Zach Sliwa and Tyler Gustafson, with assists going to Byron Vanzile (two), Nick Stott and Brandon Renkens. Chris McCracken suffered the loss in net.

Registration opens for 2014 Lucy Town Half Marathon, 5K
Registration for the 2014 Lucy Town Half Marathon and 5K is now available online. To register for the second annual event, visit the Lucy Town Half Marathon & 5K website at www.lucyrace.com. The race weekend will take place on Oct. 11-12, 2014.
From today until Feb. 1, the cost of registering for the 5K run/walk will be $18 and the cost of registering for the half marathon will be $50. From Feb. 1 until July 10, the price of registering for the 5K run/walk will increase to $20 and the cost of registering for the half marathon will increase to $55.
Additional price increases will take place Sept. 10 and Oct. 10.
Fredonia girls’ basketball

Alumni of the Fredonia girls’ basketball team are invited back to participate in a charity basketball game on Friday, Dec. 27 at 7 p.m.
Interested players need to contact coach Carol Zirkle at 785-0283 or czirkle@fcsd.wnyric.org to confirm that they are playing and give her a t-shirt size. Coach Zirkle is hoping to have as many alumni as possible representing different eras of Fredonia girls’ basketball.
This year’s game is being played after the jayvee and varsity games against Immaculata. The theme is “Alice’s Army – Winning the Battle Against Leukemia,” in honor of Alice Moore who is currently battling Leukemia.
The program is also selling t-shirts and bracelets that everyone is encouraged to buy to support Alice.

Khee Nance to be honored tonight
The Dunkirk Lady Marauders will retire Khee Nance’s jersey tonight before Dunkirk’s home game against Fredonia.
Nance finished her high school career with the most points scored in school history.

Westfield Recreation Department
Girls Youth Basketball Clinic for Grades 3-6 sponsored by the Westfield Recreation Department, will be held Saturdays from noon to 2 p.m.
Sign up at the WACS High School Gym on Jan. 11.
Fees for youth basketball are $20 for the first player in a family, $15 for a second and $10 for the third. ($45 max. per family). Scholarship assistance is available.

Indoor Soccer Sign-ups
Sign-ups for indoor soccer will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 6 at Meeder’s in Ripley; Tuesday, Jan. 7 and Thursday, Jan. 9 at the Eason Hall in Westfield; Wednesday, Jan. 8 at Country Fair in Brocton; and Monday, Jan. 13 at Chautauqua Lake Central School in Mayville.
Players must have been 4 years old by Jan. 27 and may not turn 14 until Apr. 27.
Ages 4-5 play Saturday mornings at the Eason Hall in Westfield.
Older children play on Saturday afternoon at various schools in the area.

On Saturday, Dec. 14, Hammerhead Swim Club had five swimmers attend a league meet at Olean High School.
HHSC swimmers had three first-place, three second-place, three third-place and 15 top-10 finishes at the meet.
There was one new silver time and a total of five personal-best times achieved.

Black Watch Southern Tier Soccer
Black Watch Southern Tier announces the newly formed Black Watch ST Indoor Soccer Series for boys and girls ages 7-15 with Session No. 1 being held Jan. 5, Jan. 12 and Jan. 19.
Each session will be held in Steele Hall on the campus of Fredonia State University from 1-3:30 p.m. and includes 60 minutes of technical training led by Black Watch ST Director of Coaching P.J. Gondek.
Following the technical ball skill development, there will be 90 minutes of age appropriate 5-on-5 Futsal games. In between games, players will have use of the surrounding track to increase soccer specific fitness conducted by Black Watch staff.
Teams will be developed relative to registered participants and will be co-educational. Session No. 2 will be held in February and Session No. 3 will follow in March with specific dates forthcoming.

Black Watch Southern
Tier soccer
Black Watch Southern Tier announces the newly formed Black Watch ST Indoor Soccer Series for boys and girls ages 7-15 with Session No. 1 being held Jan. 5, Jan. 12 and Jan. 19.
Each session will be held in Steele Hall on the campus of Fredonia State University from 1-3:30 p.m. and includes 60 minutes of technical training led by Black Watch ST Director of Coaching P.J. Gondek.
Following the technical ball skill development, there will be 90 minutes of age appropriate 5-on-5 Futsal games. In between games, players will have use of the surrounding track to increase soccer specific fitness conducted by Black Watch staff.
Teams will be developed relative to registered participants and will be co-educational. Session No. 2 will be held in February and Session No. 3 will follow in March with specific dates forthcoming.

The Hammerhead Swim Club had 24 swimmers attend a Niagara Swim League meet at East Aurora High School on Saturday, Dec. 7. Swimming in his first meet with HHSC was Josiah Cox.
HHSC swimmers had nine first-place, six second-place, six-third place and a total of 49 top-10 finishes at the meet. There was one new silver time and a total of 43 personal-best times achieved.

Dunkirk Elks Lodge to hold Annual Hoop Shoot contest
The Dunkirk Elks Lodge will hold its annual Hoop Shoot Contest on Saturday, Dec. 7. The contest will be held at the Dunkirk High School Auxiliary Gym (Marauder Drive entrance) between 9 a.m. and noon.
The contest is open to all boys and girls in three age groups – 8-9; 10-11 and 12-13.
All contestants must have a copy of their birth certificate with them in order to participate.
Bills Boosters
The Southern Tier Bills Booster Club will watch the Buffalo Bills vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers game on Sunday at the First Ward Falcon Club.
Roast beef sandwiches will be provided at halftime. Members may bring a dish to pass.
Bowling for Smiles
Operation Smile will hold bowling at Lucky Lanes on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 3 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 and include two games and shoes. Anyone interested should contact Megan Favale at fava0014@fredonia.edu.
Gowanda football
history book available to the public
After a successful unveiling at the Gowanda VFW Club on Saturday, Nov. 30, the book titled: Through The Eyes of a Panther: The History of Gowanda Football 1961-1992 is now available to the public.
Numerous stories in the book cover the long-time rivalry of the Panthers against Southwestern Conference opponents Fredonia and Dunkirk, plus Gowanda’s connection to the Cardinal Mindszenty football program.

Matt Ginley and Cory Dziduch had a pair of goals each for P-Dubs while Kevin Salemi, Justin Giles, Jerry Tramuta and Eric Tarnowski all added a goal each. Assists were credited to Josh Polak (three), Giles (two), John Polak, Derek Sheridan, Dziduch and Chris Shur. A.J. Riforgiat picked up the win between the pipes.
Dom Polski was led by goals from Byron Vanzile, Chris Mulkin and Zach Sliwa while assists went to Matt Mincin, Brandon Renckens and Jeff Carlson.

Brian Denea had a hat trick and two assists to help lead Wicked Glen past Heenan’s while Sean Strickler added four goals and an assist. Also scoring for Wicked Glen were James Azarella and Bill Clark, with assits going to James Atzott, Kevin Smith, Chris Shur and Azarella. Mike Barret was in net for the win.
Byron Vanzile had a pair of goals for Heenan’s in the loss while Mike Rozewicz added the other goal. Dave Wright picked up an assist while Gary Shain was in net.

CVCS Holiday Tournament
The Cassadaga Valley boys’ varsity basketball team will host its Holiday Tournament on Friday, Dec. 27 and Monday, Dec. 30.
The semifinals will begin on Dec. 27 at 6 p.m., when Cattaraugus-Little Valley takes on Oracle Charter. Then, at 7:30, Cassadaga Valley will play Global Concepts.
The consolation final is set for Dec. 30 at 6 p.m., with the championship game to begin at 7:30 p.m.
