Blue Devils to honor National Girls and Women in Sports Day?Saturday

For the fifth-straight year, the Fredonia Athletic Department is celebrating the National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Festivities will take place Saturday when the men’s and women’s basketball teams play host to Oneonta State.

T-shirts will be given away to the first 150 fans. There will also be dozens of raffle prizes, including some donated by the Buffalo Bills, Sabres and Bandits. Raffle tickets are $1 each. The Fredonia Fire 4th- and 5th-grade girls’ basketball team will play a game at halftime of the women’s game and interact with the team afterwards.

With the new SUNYAC format this year, the men’s game starts at 2 p.m., followed by the women at 4 p.m. As usual, Fredonia students showing a valid ID card will be admitted free. In addition, for both games, children ages 16 and under will be free of charge. Admission price for all other spectators will be $3 – a reduction of $2 per ticket.

Although it is only the fifth year at Fredonia, the nationwide celebration of NG&WSD is entering its 29th year.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day began 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Florence Hyman for her athletic achievements and work to assure equality for girls’ and women’s sports. Hyman died of Marfan’s Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan.

Support and funding for this weekend’s festivities have been provided by Student Affairs, the President’s Office, Campus Life, Residence Life and an FSA grant.
