Fredonia to mark National Girls and Women in Sports Day this Saturday
Special to the OBSERVER
The Department of Athletics and Recreation at the State University of New York at Fredonia will commemorate the 31st annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day at Steele Hall this Saturday in conjunction with men’s and women’s basketball games and a men’s and women’s varsity swimming and diving meet.
Free T-shirts celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day will be given out, while supplies last, to those attending the Battle of the Lake Series basketball doubleheader with SUNY Buffalo State. Tip-off for the men’s game is 4 p.m., with the women’s game to follow at 6 p.m.
For the seventh year in a row, a scrimmage featuring a local youth girls’ basketball team will be played during halftime of the women’s game.
Admission to the men’s and women’s games is $5 for adults and $2 for students. There is no admission fee for State University of New York at Fredonia students and Blue Devil Booster Club members with passes.
Raffle tickets for assorted items, such as local and professional sports memorabilia items and children’s sporting goods, will also be available for purchase during the men’s and women’s games.
The Blue Devils will host a men’s and women’s swimming and diving competition against The College at Brockport and Allegheny College at 1 p.m.
Proceeds from the raffles will support the event and the items included in the raffle.
Founded to honor Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman, National Girls and Women in Sports Day has evolved into a day that recognizes past and current sports achievements of all female athletes and advocates for equality and access for girls and women in sports. Campus sponsors include: the Faculty Student Association, Student Association, Residence Life, Campus Life, the President’s Office and Student Affairs.
Local businesses and community groups who are interested in contributing to and/or attending the event may contact Associate Director of Athletics and Recreation/Senior Woman Administrator Megan Valentine at megan.valentine@fredonia.edu or 673-3542.
