Willowbrook Golf Course

Wednesday Travel League — Al Etzel earned his first tour victory of the season after shooting the low round of 81 at Willowbrook Golf Course in Lockport. An otherwise beautiful day was interrupted by an isolated thunderstorm that delayed play for roughly 45 minutes on the back nine, leaving golfers to finish play under extremely wet conditions.

Ed Tofil finished second with 84, while Butch Mackowiak and Mike Wolfe tied for third with 85s. Etzel and Robert Calph each shot 39 to lead the front nine (West Course), while Tofil shot 41 to lead the back nine (North Course).

In the B Flight, Bob Thompson was the overall winner after a six-hole tiebreaker with Tom Destro, Danny Kubera, and Matt Traniello. In the C Flight, Mike Willoughby won a tiebreaker over Gary Haase. In an unprecedented result, there were six winners of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award. The winners were Calph, Wayne Ormsby, Kubera, Traniello, Haase and Jack Griswold.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight-Mick Dunning (Nos. 7 & 9), Calph (No. 8), Tim Walawender (No. 10), and Tofil (No.18); B Flight-Jeff Marsowicz (Nos. 1 & 14), Kubera (Nos. 9 & 11), and Destro (No. 16); C Flight-Haase (Nos. 10 & 11) and Willoughby (No. 18). Closest to the pin were Wolfe (No. 6), Joe Bifaro (No. 7), Kubera (No. 11) and Ken Kaus (No. 13).

Top point winners were Kubera (51), Dunning (37), and Wolfe, Kaus, and Bifaro (14 each). Season points leaders: 1) Wolfe (405), 2) Calph (271), 3) Kubera (239), 4) Dave Franklin (231), 5) Etzel (180), 6) Tofil (179), 7) Dave Mathews (154), 8) Ron Rys (137), 9) Kaus (134), 10) John Waterman (133).

Annual One-Pitch Softball Tournament

The 38th Annual Westfield One-Pitch Slow Pitch Softball Tournament.

The Annual Westfield One-Pitch Slow Pitch Softball Tournament will be held August 26th in Westfield. Entry fees must be in by August 24th.

This is a one-pitch slow pitch format with each batter starting with a 3-2 count. The entry fee is $250 per team. A payout based on 16 teams is $750 for 1st, $375 for 2nd, & $250 for 3rd.

Sunset Bay Experience – Reach the Beach 5K Run set for Aug. 19

The Sunset Bay Experience — Reach the Beach 5K Run will be held Saturday, Aug. 19 at Sunset Bay, Iola Drive, Irving. Registration is at 8:30 a.m., with a 5K run and walk starting at 9:30 a.m. The entry fee is $25 the day of the race, $20 for pre-registration, or $10 student rate. Other attractions include craft booths, vendors, a basket raffle, wagon of cheer raffle, 50/50, a live band, food and drink specials at Cabana Sam’s. All proceeds benefit the Sunset Bay Volunteer Fire Company.

Gowanda co-ed youth soccer begins September 3

A fall co-ed youth soccer program will be held at the new Gateway Park on Palmer Street in the Village of Gowanda every Sunday beginning Sept. 3 through the middle of Oct. from 6 to 7:30 pm. This program is free to all children ages 5 through 14 regardless of residency. Previous soccer experience is not needed to join this program.

A football skills competition will be held at Gateway Park on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. Children ages 8 through 13 can compete for awards. A pizza party will follow for all participants. 2017 Gary Tripp Memorial Golf Tournament

The 2017 tournament is set for Saturday, Sept. 9, at Hillview/Vineyards golf courses in Fredonia. There will be prizes and/or games at each hole.

The registration fee of $65 per golfer includes food on the courses and dinner at the Kosciuszko Club.

Times for GTMGT being with registration at 9 a.m., shotgun start at 10 a.m. and dinner and awards at 4 p.m.

The deadline to sign up foursomes is Friday, Sept. 1. Contact Katie or Pat at 366-1044.

Money raised from the past tournaments have been used to establish an annual Gary Tripp colorectal cancer research fund at Roswell Park, an annual GTMGT Dunkirk High School scholarship and an annual donation to the GTMGT SUNY Fredonia scholarship.

Fredonia Youth Cheerleading Camp

Children ages 5-15 are invited to attend the cheerleading clinic Monday, Aug. 14 and Tuesday, Aug. 15 from 8 a.m. to noon.

The camp is designed to help the Fredonia University Cheerleaders raise money for Nationals, which is held in Disney World.

The cost is $30 per participant. The clinic will include: 1) Learning how to cheer and dance to perform at a boys soccer game. 2) Free bow and T-shirt to wear to the game and second practice. 3) Fun games, stunting and team building exercises. 4) Personal attention from the Fredonia cheerleaders.

“Stack Your Balls” Golf Scramble

The 2nd Annual One Ball “Stack Your Balls” Golf Scramble for Testicular Cancer will be held at Cardinal Hills Golf Course in Randolph, NY on Saturday, Sept. 23. Entry fee is $280 per team (includes lunch and dinner) with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

“Stack Your Balls” is a fun format where you can stack multiple birdie/eagle putts on top of each other on the same hole. Each team will post a regular scramble score and a “Stack Your Balls” score.

All proceeds benefit One Ball Foundation, a local 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to raise awareness about testicular cancer and help support those in treatment. Hole Sponsors are being accepted, as well as donations to be used for raffle prizes and hole prizes.
