Wednesday Travel League

Due to unforeseen complications, the league had to make a last-minute course change and wound up playing Buffalo Tournament Club in Lancaster. The event, the “Frank Borowski Invitational,” was the league’s first major of the season and is named for league founder Frank Borowski, who now resides in Florida. Ed Tofil was the overall winner after posting the low round of 78. Tom Destro and Robert Calph tied for second with 81’s. Destro led the front nine with 39 and Tofil led the back nine with 38. The win also marked Tofil’s 70th career tour victory. Tofil has now won all five events he has played in this season and has six straight wins dating back to last season. Destro’s 81 was a personal best in league play. Other flight winners were Wayne Ormsby (B), Jim Ellman Sr. (C), and Tony Destro (D). The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Angelo Leone.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight – Tom Destro (Nos. 1 & 9), Ed Tofil (Nos. 4 & 12), Pat Weaver (Nos. 7 & 13), and Al Etzel (No. 15); B Flight – Dave Criscione (Nos. 1, 15, & 18), Al Bradley (No. 11), and Ormsby (No. 14); C Flight – Mike Willoughby (No. 1), Ellman (Nos. 4 & 5), John Bongiovanni (No. 6), Dennis Gawronski Sr. (Nos. 9 & 12), Mick Dunning Sr. (Nos. 11 & 14), and Don Kujawa (No. 18); D Flight – Tim Walawender (Nos. 1, 5, & 8), Tony Destro (No. 3), Mike Wolfe (Nos. 4 & 14), John Tofil (No. 12), and Joe Bifaro (No. 17).

Closest to the pin were Gary Haase (No.5), Wolfe (No.8), Joe Michalski (No.12), and Bongiovanni (No.15). Winners of the Par-3 Contest were: A – Michalski (+1), B – Ormsby and Haase (+3 tied), C – Bongiovanni (+2), D – Walawender (+1).

Top point winners were Ed Tofil (46), Walawender (41), Wolfe (35), Etzel (34), Bongiovanni (33), and Criscione (32). Season points leaders: 1) Walawender (144), 2) Wolfe (138), 3) Ed Tofil (113), 4) Haase and Weaver (72 each), 6) Etzel (61), 7) Kujawa (59), 8) Dave Miller (56), 9) Criscione (53), 10) Bob Thompson (52).

This week the league makes the short trip to Shorewood Country Club. There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Golfers need to be signed up with John (785-2291) by 6 p.m. Monday.

Par Tee Girls – Tuesday Night League

Lowest net scores of 34 go to Pat Thompson, Kim Underwood and Jill Muck. Next up at 37 goes to Judy Mowery. Prize holes: Longest drive, Judy Mowery. Shortest drive, Carol Somers.

Women Who Golf for Fun

Golfers played on Wednesday, May 30 under warm and sunny conditions. Pat Daniel led the scoring for the first week of play. Women Who Golf for Fun meet every Wednesday — weather permitting — at the Vineyards. Tee off time is noon and all skill levels and abilities are welcome. No need for a partner, pairings are random. Fredonia Junior League-Family Orthodontics

A pitchers’ duel with great defense ended this game in a scoreless tie. Callie Draggett and Naomi Muck combined for the Family Ortho shutout while Molly Burgess earned the shutout for Fairpoint. McKenna Crawford was a defensive standout for Family Ortho while Draggett and Maggie Mikula each had two hits. Burgess also led Fairpoint offensively with two hits.

Dragon Boat Race set for August 11

The dragons are back! The 2018 Dragon Boat Race Committee would like to announce that the third annual Chautauqua Lake Dragon Boat Race has been scheduled for August 11 at Lucille Ball Memorial Park in Celoron. A pancake breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. with proceeds benefitting Meals on Wheels of Jamestown. Races begin at 9 a.m.

Originating in China 2,000 years ago, dragon boat racing is one the fastest growing water sports in the world. Races are held annually in Buffalo and the Finger Lakes region. This event continues to be the only one of its kind on Chautauqua Lake.

Dragon boat racing is team-driven as participants work in unison to propel a 31-foot-long canoe through a designated course. Ten or 20 paddlers power the boat with one drummer in the bow to motivate and keep the paddlers in sync, and a steer-person is provided in the stern to guide the boat. No experience is necessary. Prizes awarded for each division based on race times, plus new this year will be drummer awards for most interactive and best dressed drummer. Don’t miss the boat!

Fredonia schools plan girls basketball camp

The 2018 Fredonia Central School Girls Basketball Camp will be held June 25-28 in the Fredonia High School and Middle School gyms.

Cost is $105 per camper ($90 if paid by June 15, deduct $10 if five or more students from the same school attend camp and send in their applications together). Eligible girls ae students entering grades 3-12.

Are you ready for a fun-filled week of learning the skills that will make you a better basketball player? If you want to have fun, improve your skill level, play games and compete in daily competitions, this is the camp for you.

Each player is expected to arrive between 8:30 and 8:55 a.m. Camp will start promptly at 9 a.m. Athletes are expected to bring their own lunch. There will be cold pop, water and Gatorade for sale at lunch time and at the end of the day. All athletes should have their ride pick them up at 3:30 p.m. All parents are welcome to come to the awards ceremony at 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 28.

SUNY Fredonia hosting kids’ hockey camp

The SUNY Fredonia Hockey Camp for boys and girls ages 5-12 will be held Aug. 27-30. It runs from Monday through Thursday from 10 to 11:15 a.m. in the Steele Hall Ice Arena.
