Shorewood Country Club

Men’s and Women’s Club Championship — The 2018 Shorewood Country Club Championship weekend was conducted Saturday and Sunday. With a format of individual medal play, the 36-hole event produced the 2018 men’s and women’s champions as well as several flight winners.

The 2018 men’s champion is Kevin Kaszuba. He secured the title with rounds of 72-75 for a two day total of 147. Kaszuba used a solid finish to hold off Blake Ihrig, who secured second with a two-day total of 149.

Other flight winners were as follows:

— A Flight winner: Terry Redman (78-77-155)

— B Flight winner: Tony Nasca (93-85-178)

— C Flight winner: Warren Kelly (93-96-189)

The 2018 women’s club champion is Jenny Ringler. She secured the title with rounds of 80-81 for a two day total of 161. Ringler secured her victory with a score of 39 in the first nine holes of the second round which provided a solid cushion heading into the back nine on Sunday afternoon. Ringler was able to hold off Sue Marsh who battled to the end and grabbed second place by two shots.

The A Flight Winner was Cathy Berner.

Stericycle A’s 11, Sunset Bay Beach Club Braves 1 — Byron Keyser and Brian Gunnell combined to notch the A’s win by striking out 11 and scattering five hits. Brandon Shelters, Gib Stuart, Nick Luther, Dan Williamson, Brian Wojcinski, Jim Quinn, Zack Nykula and Curt Jones all hit safely to lead the Swinging A’s offense. The Braves’ Cody Wicks had three hits to back losing pitcher Tom Fritz.

DHS cross country and track teams’ Lakefront 5K set for Saturday

The Dunkirk High School cross country and track teams are hosting the 20th Annual Dunkirk Lakefront 5K this Saturday at 9 a.m.

The event will start and finish at the boardwalk and is also a part of the Striders Runner of the Year Series. All the proceeds go directly to the track teams to help them attend camps and invitationals throughout the year. You can go to www.lakefront5K.com to register, or come down Saturday morning and register as well starting at 7:30 a.m. on the boardwalk.

Learn how to play pickleball Thursday in Dunkirk

Would you like to learn to play pickleball, America’s fastest-growing sport? Join us Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club, 296 East Lake Shore Drive (corner of Jerboa), Dunkirk. No experience is necessary. Bring a good pair of sneakers. Equipment is provided.
