Geneseo takes care of Fredonia, 6-1, Saturday

The Fredonia men’s soccer team dropped their contest against SUNY Geneseo Saturday afternoon in Fredonia 6-1.

Geneseo (4-3-1, 1-1-0 SUNYAC) came out firing in the first half and exploded for five first half goals. Four of them came from senior Ethan Gunty in the 6th, 19th, 35th, and 45th minutes.

The Blue Devils made a push to get back into the game before the half, but failed to capitalize on a few scoring opportunities. In the 23rd minute, a Bryan Sibble free kick was sent into the box leading to a Brian Theuerkauf header only to be stopped by a diving Geneseo keeper, Dillon Medd.

Seven minutes later, Parker Healy took control and weaved through multiple Geneseo defenders to find a good look at the net, but sent it just over the crossbar.

Geneseo held a 5-0 lead at the half.

Three minutes into the second half, Bryan Sibble was awarded a penalty kick that was eventually saved by Medd. In the 65th minute, another Sibble free kick was launched and headed by Healy. The ball fell into the lap of senior Ryan Keller who buried a goal from right in front of the net to get Fredonia on the scoreboard. Healy was credited with the assist. Keller’s goal made it 5-1.

Geneseo’s Dean Kousmanidis capped off the scoring with a goal in the 82nd minute.

Despite the score, the Blue Devils led Geneseo in shots (17-16) and corner kicks (8-4).

The loss brings Fredonia to 6-2-1 overall and 1-1 in SUNYAC play. The Blue Devils hope to bounce back strong when they return to action Sept. 28 at home against John Carroll University at 7 p.m.

Women’s Soccer

Fredonia blanked

GENESEO – The Fredonia women’s soccer team was defeated 4-0 by SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Devils trailed at halftime, 1-0.

Geneseo’s Laurie Knapp (61′), Jennifer Moran (68′), and Carolanne Murphy (81′) all netted goals in the second half to solidify a Knight victory.

Kendall Owczarzak faced 16 shots and made 12 saves.

Geneseo improves to 4-1-3.

The loss drops the Blue Devils to 2-7-0 and 0-2-0 in the SUNYAC. They return to action on Tuesday at St. John Fisher College at 7:00 p.m.

Cross Country

Devils fifth at Rochester meet

NORTH CHILI – At the Roberts Weslyan Invitational on Saturday, the women’s cross country team finished fifth in a field of 21 teams. The Blue Devils were led by Bonnie Binggeli’s 9th place finish. She completed the 5K course in a time of 19:10.

Binggeli was followed closely by Brenna Donovan who finished 13th in a time of 19:15 and Stephanie Wojnowsk who was 15th in 19:19.

Other top Fredonia finishers were Carly Debono (19:35) in 28th place and Emily Maguire (19:56) in 46th place.

A total of 223 runners competed.

Meanwhile, in the men’s race, the Blue Devils finished fifth in a field of 22 teams.

The Blue Devils were led by Collin Mulcahy (9th place, 26:08).

Bobby Cooper’s 15th-place finish came in a time of in a time of 26:25.

Other top finishers were Ethan Francis (Dunkirk, 26:45) in 25th place; Cyd Scott (26:54) in 30th; and Jack Erhard (27:24) in 41st.

A total of 213 runners competed.

The Blue Devils return to action Oct. 1 at the Mike Woods Invitational at SUNY Geneseo.

Women’s Tennis

Devils drop

Oswego State, 7-2

The Fredonia women’s tennis team defeated over Oswego, 7-2, on Saturday at the Steele Hall Courts.

In their longest played match of the season, the Blue Devils started the day with doubles wins at one and two. At first doubles, sophomore Olivia Miller and freshman Anna Chiacchia came out on top 9-7. At second, seniors Halee Dickinson and Chloe Cohen blanked their challengers 8-0.

The third doubles team of Phoebe Langdon and Christine Thomas was defeated 8-4.

At first singles, Miller handled her opponent, 6-1, 6-3. After losing her first set 4-6, Cohen fought to win the second set 7-5 and the tie breaker for the third set 10-6 to claim second singles.

At third singles, Chiacchia silenced her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Dickinson at fourth, lost the first set 3-6, and rallied back to win the second set in a tie breaker 7-6. Despite the momentum, Dickinson lost the tiebreaker for the third set in a back and forth battle for the lead that ended in a 11-9 defeat.

In the fifth singles slot, Chloe Karnisky posted a 6-1, 6-2 score. At sixth, Adriana Speach fought back from a 1-4 deficit in the first set, taking the first one 7-6. In the second set, Speach came out on top, with a 6-4 showing.

The Blue Devils improved to 7-2 on the season.

Women’s Volleyball

Devils fall to New Paltz, down Plattsburgh

POTSDAM – The Fredonia women’s volleyball team lost 3-0 vs. New Paltz, then defeated Plattsburgh, 3-1, on the second day of SUNYAC Pool Play on Saturday.

Kristen Stanek had 16 kills and Jane Garrity added 10 in the win over Plattsburgh. Freshman Amanda Mosack contributed 49 assists. Rachel Aiello had five service aces.

Garrity had a team-best three blocks, and Aiello had 28 digs.

The Devils dropped the first set 25-16 before rallying to take the next three.

In the first match of the day, Stanek had 10 kills and Hallie Christopher had 16 assists. Courtney Poirier led the defense with 17 digs.

New Paltz claimed the sets by scores of 25-6, 25-14 and 25-21.

The Blue Devils (9-6, 2-1 SUNYAC) are back in action on Tuesday at Medaille College starting at 7 p.m.
