Fredonia teams win at Blue Devil Classic

Junior Abby Price had a wide-open look in the 66th minute and connected for her first goal of the season. She was assisted by Shania Platt.

Both teams battled to a scoreless first half.

Freshman goaltender Marissa Quimby made seven saves in her first collegiate shutout for the Devils. With 3:45 left in the game, Quimby made a spectacular diving save to keep the lead. She also made a diving block on a breakaway as time expired to preserve the win.

Megan Dulniak had five saves for the Spartans.

The Devils out-shot the Spartans 15-10. D’Youville held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Earlier in the day, Oswego defeated Penn State Behrend, 2-1, in overtime. The Classic wraps up today when Fredonia plays Behrend, and D’Youville takes on Oswego State. Both games will kick off at 1:30 p.m. The Devils and Behrend play in the stadium, while the D’Youville/Oswego tilt is on the turf field.

ALFRED STATE 0

The Fredonia men’s soccer team upped its record to 3-0 with a 5-0 victory over Alfred State in the first round of the Blue Devil Classic on Friday. The Devils picked up a pair of early goals and cruised to the victory.

Parker Healy scored in the ninth minute, and Dave Trabold scored in the 11th minute to stake Fredonia to a 2-0 lead. Healy’s goal, his second of the season, came on a double assist from Ryan Ross and Pa Lu.

Trabold scored for the third consecutive game, and was also assisted by Ross. Ross made it 3-0 with just over 30 minutes to play on an unassisted goal.

The fourth goal came with 26:32 left off the foot of Matt Belardi. Ross and Healy assisted. Healy added a fifth goal, as Dylan Moeser provided the helper. Ross had a goal and three assists, while Healy had a pair of goals and an assist.

Devil netminder Ty Bentham made five saves in his first shutout of the season. Alfred State’s Zack Barker was credited with three saves and gave up four goals before being spelled by Johnny Starzee, who recorded one save.

Alfred State falls to 1-2 this season.

In the first game of the day, Houghton downed Buffalo State, 2-0.

The men’s portion of the Classic wraps up today with a pair of games at 4:30 p.m. Fredonia takes on Houghton in the stadium for the tourney title, while Alfred State and Buffalo State battle on the turf field.
