Blue Devils win consolation game in overtime

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Bobby Polachek scored the tying and winning goals Sunday in a 5-4 Fredonia men’s hockey overtime win over SUNY Canton in the consolation game of the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational.

With the Blue Devils on a power play, Polachek outraced two defenders and scored the tying goal with a rising shot from just inside the blue line with 4:42 left in regulation. His game-winner came at 3:51 into the overtime. On a 3-on-2 rush, he slid a puck to the opposite side which deflected off the skate of a Canton defender and between the legs of the goaltender.

The goals were the fourth and fifth of the season for Polachek, who tied for the team lead. Sam Wilbur had a goal and an assist and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Wilbur’s two goals give him a team-high 13 (5 goals, 8 assists).

Jimmy Morgan and Mike Freeman had the other Fredonia goals, each their third of the season. In net, Eric Bogart made 41 saves and improved to 2-4-0.

The Blue Devils are 4-4-1 overall heading into a home SUNYAC weekend. Friday’s game against Potsdam is the annual Stroke Awareness Game. Plattsburgh visits on Saturday. Both games have 7 p.m. starts.

Sunday’s loss dropped SUNY Canton to 2-5-0. The Roos will visit Steele Hall for a pair of games Dec. 8 and Dec. 9.
