Lady Bulldogs win in extra innings, 11-10

BROCTON — The Brocton Lady Bulldogs softball team won a thrilling game over Southwestern on Friday night, 11-10, in eight innings at Brocton High School.

Brocton surrendered three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game, 7-7, and push the game into extra innings. Each starting pitcher — Jen Potter of Brocton and Sofia Genareo of Southwestern — allowed seven runs and did not factor into the decision.

Ashton Beckerink relieved Genareo to begin the sixth inning, and pitched two shutout innings to get the Lady Trojans to extra innings. After a series of mistakes in the field, Southwestern pushed across three runs in the top half of the eighth inning to take a 10-7 lead.

Not to be outdone, Brocton reached base on back-to-back walks to lead off the bottom half of the eighth. Both runners came around to score, to make the score 10-9 Southwestern.

Brocton got the game-tying run on a ground ball from Megan Gloss, scoring Makayla Vacanti to deadlock the game at 10 apiece.

Then, with two outs, a dropped third strike caused the runner to reach base safely and keep the game alive in the eighth inning. Runners were on the corners with two outs, for Cheyanna Rivera.

With the game on the line, Rivera drilled a pitch into right field for a walk-off single to send Brocton fans home with a thrilling comeback victory.

“The girls were ecstatic,” said Brocton coach Julie Arnold. “It was such an exciting game.”

In addition to Rivera’s game-winner, Brocton got key hits on Friday from Jenelle Grigelevich and Annalise Wdowiasz, each with multi-hit games. Grigelevich had two runs batted in and a double in Friday’s game.

Brocton (2-0, 1-0) will host Maple Grove next, on Monday at Brocton High School.
