Fredonia’s Brown wins at Frewsburg

FREWSBURG — Emily Brown did it again for the Fredonia Hillbillies cross country team, winning Tuesday’s race at Frewsburg. Overall, the girls took first at the meet over Frewsburg and Randolph.

Brown’s time of 21:26 took out the competition in a race where head coach Carol Zirkle said, “She got faster and faster as the race went on.”

“Emily ran a strategic race today,” said Zirkle. “She ran a really strong last mile and a half.”

Joining Brown in the top 10 on Tuesday were Savannah Lashbrook (22:24), Anna Buchanan (23:27), Ashlyn Ambrose (23:28) and Aurora Merwin (26:34).

“I thought the top four ran really good races,” said Zirkle. After a slow start, Zirkle said Merwin “had a great last mile for a respectable finish.”

For the Fredonia boys, the Hillbillies finished just one point back from first place. Diego Rey finished second overall with a time of 17:47. Chris Annear was second for Fredonia with a time of 18:55. Kevin Redfield (19:32), Ledreth Velez-Olmo (20:26), Matt Abbatoy (20:48), Brendan Mero (21:20) and Avery Willebrandt (21:25) finished out the day for Fredonia. Velez-Olmo and Mero are both freshman.

“Both freshmen had their best race of the year,” said Zirkle.

Fredonia is back in action on Saturday at the Pembroke Invitational.
