Steelers hockey sweeps weekend

The Dunkirk/Fredonia Steelers varsity hockey team swept two games this past weekend in Western New York High School Club Hockey League action.

On Saturday night at the Northtowns Center in Amherst, the Steelers won their first game of the season, 6-0, over St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. Nine players found the scoresheet for Dunkirk/Fredonia. Jared Glowniak had two goals and one assist while Tate Olson had one goal and one assist. Michael Norton, Zach Korzniewski and Josh Cooper also scored for the Steelers. Austin Rott, Michael Persch, Cooper Harris and Dawson Bird each had one assist. Gabriel Persch was in goal for the shutout.

On Sunday afternoon at Steele Hall, the Steelers defeated Iroquois/Alden, 4-3.

Dunkirk/Fredonia led, 3-0, after the first period and 4-1 after the second period.

Iroquois/Alden scored a single goal in the second period and two in the third period.

Glowniak led the way again with two goals while Bird and Norton each had single goals. Michael Persch had two assists while Alex Rush, Korzniewski, Olson and Ethan Brunner each had one assist. Nick Novelli was in goal for the Steelers.

“It was a good weekend for the team,” coach Jim Rush said. “It had been two weeks since our previous game and the players worked hard in the practices in that time frame and it showed this weekend. They worked hard in both games and the effort was rewarded with the victories. … Hopefully, we can maintain that momentum moving forward.”

The Steelers improved to 2-3-1 in the league and will play at Olean on Sunday.
