Oneonta sweeps Blue Devil hoops

ONEONTA — The Fredonia women’s basketball team dropped a 53-44 road contest at Oneonta on Friday. Rae White and Sydney Turley each scored 11 points. Jenna Einink grabbed 14 rebounds and had four assists, while being held to just two points.

The low-scoring affair saw the Devils hit on 27 percent of their shots, while Oneonta connected on 28 percent of its tries for the game.

Oneonta took control in the first period, jumping out to a 19-7 lead. They would continue to outscore the Devils in the second quarter, taking a 31-16 lead into halftime.

Fredonia would outscore the Dragons in the second half, 28-22.

They cut the lead to single digits in the third quarter. A three-point play by Turley cut the lead to nine, 37-28, with 2:24 on the clock. The Devils would get within nine one more time, when Lauren Mickley nailed a three for the game’s final points.

Oneonta (17-4 overall / 11-3 SUNYAC) received a 13-point effort from Alexa Amalbert — one of only five players to figure in the scoring for the Red Dragons.

The Devils even their conference record at 8-8, and drop to 11-12 overall. They travel to New Paltz today.

MENS: Oneonta 70, Fredonia State 44

ONEONTA — The Fredonia men’s basketball team hung with Oneonta midway through the first half before surrendering the lead and falling to the host Red Dragons, 70-44, on Friday evening.

Mark Morgan led the team with 10 points and Messiah Hill had 11 rebounds. Kadeem Riddick added eight points.

The Devils would lead 15-14 at the 10:41 mark before Oneonta would overtake them on a pair of free throws by Aaron Schultz. The Devils would regain the lead a few possessions later, 19-18, then tie the game at 20-all.

From there, things went south. Oneonta went on a 12-0 run to secure the lead for good. By the half, they would lead 38-26.

Oneonta would lead by as many as 28 before cruising to the victory. Oneonta improves to 11-10 and 6-8 in the SUNYAC.

The Devils (2-21, 1-15) take on New Paltz today.
