Fredonia’s Novelli, Hoffman qualify for Sectionals

FORESTVILLE — Southwestern’s Max Vaughn fired an 86 on the first 18 holes and a 12 on three extra holes to win the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 qualifier with a 98 on Monday at Tri-County Country Club.

Jamestown’s Caden Salvaggio finished second with an 88 over 18 holes and a 16 over the final three holes for a 104 total.

In third place was Fredonia’s Nick Novelli after a 95-16-111. Falconer’s David Allen was fourth with a 96-15-111 and Southwestern’s Drake Bell was fifth with a 96-16-112. Evan Christensen made it three Trojans advancing to next week’s sectionals after his 97-15-111.

Fredonia’s Lucas Hoffman will be the alternate after his 94-18-112.

“We’re happy with having two moving on,” said Fredonia Coach Ross Conti. “Nick played steady throughout those tough conditions.”

The Section VI Championships will be held Monday, May 20 at River Oaks Golf Club in Grand Island.

“This whole spring has been tough,” added Coach Conti. “It’s been the worst of the last few years with weather conditions. Some of the courses haven’t been open for their members yet, the fact that your playing in these conditions it’s hard — it’s very adverse conditions for them to get through it.”
