ELLICOTTVILLE — The Westfield 10-12 All-Stars softball team won the Sectional title on Wednesday against Pittsford, in Ellicottville. Pittsford needed to beat Westfield twice to win the Sectional title in the double-elimination format, while Westfield only needed one win after not losing leading up to the title matchup. Pittsford managed to win the first one, but Westfield came back to win Game 2 for the title.

The Westfield girls opened Game 1 with a two-run lead after three innings. Pittsford answered back and tied the game up after a home run in the fourth frame. Westfield scored one more run in the fifth to take the lead back, only to be answered with three runs by Pittsford to reclaim the lead. Pittsford’s pitcher only allowed two hits, striking out eight in the contest to earn a 5-3 win. Eva Gnadzinski and Sydney Hotchkiss had singles for Westfield. Eva Gnadzinski threw a three-hitter, striking out seven in the loss.

In Game 2, a winner-take-all for the Sectional Championship, the same two pitchers squared up again. Both pitchers were lights out for their teams, as Pittsford’s pitcher threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Gnadzinski also threw a two-hitter, with seven strikeouts in a complete game shutout to earn a 1-0 win.

After five scoreless innings, Brynn Ernewein started the sixth with a single. She made her way around to third and scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Pittsford, in the bottom of the sixth, put runners on first and second with two outs. Pittsford hit a rocket to left field, only to have Madyson Burgess charge, come up with the throw to third and complete the last out on a force to win the Sectional title.

The Westfield girls will be traveling to Fishkill, NY for a shot at the State Title later this summer.
