OBSERVER Staff Report

The Fredonia Lady ‘Billies girls cross country team has seen plenty of headlines because of the excellence of Emily Brown, but this weekend, it was an entire team accomplishment that stood out the most. The Lady ‘Billies team won the small school division at the Sunset Stampede this weekend, with four runners in the top 30 overall.

Brown led the way with a time of 19:42, good for second overall in the race. Savannah Lashbrook also placed in the top 10, with a time of 21:10 good for ninth place. Julia LeBaron (22:19) finished 24th and Ashlyn Ambrose (22:23) was 27th to help lead Fredonia to victory.

“The girls team had their best team finish at an invitational due to all the girls running very good races and showing improvement on the team level. Ashlyn Ambrose ran her strongest race of the season,” said Fredonia coach Carol Zirkle.

McKenna Miller (26:45), Lucy Prevet (28:08), Marah Long (28:10) and Gabby Domenico (28:12) also ran for the Lady ‘Billies in the race. The Lady ‘Billies were fourth overall among schools in any division.

The Fredonia boys team placed 20th overall, with two runners in the top 80. Chris Annear was 65th with a time of 19:06, while Adam Lesch finished 78th in 19:26.

Oliver Madariaga (20:35), Fred Gullo (20:36), Alex Field (20:42), Owen Ludwig (20:45) and Avery Willibrandt (21:07) had solid times for Fredonia.

“Oliver Madariaga ran his best race of the season. He has shown steady improvement over the last month. Adam Lesch also raced exceptionally well,” said Zirkle.

Fredonia races at home this week, scheduled for Tuesday, but it could be moved to Wednesday due to the weather forecast.
