T’birds clinch playoff spot

ALLEGANY — The Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton Thunderbirds will be heading to the playoffs, as they took down the Allegany-Limestone Gators 33-1 on Friday night.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton needed to win by six or more points to secure the three seed in Class C South, which they more than clinched.

The team got off to a 27-0 start in the first half, putting their foot right on the gas.

“We did a nice job jumping on them early on, and we got out to a nice big lead,” said Thunderbirds coach Bryan Bongiovanni.

The Gators were able to answer right before the half to get on the board, and brought it back to as close as 27-21 late in the fourth quarter, but the Thunderbirds stood tall on a fourth down stand to hold the lead at six, and it was running back Ryan Jafarjian who put the exclamation point on.

Jafarjian finished the day with 16 carries for 284 yards and three touchdowns, while Caleb Shelton added two touchdowns on the ground as well.

“I’m very proud of these kids,” Bongiovanni said. “A lot of programs didn’t want Brocton and Westfield kids. We’re collectively proud of those three communities for proving those doubters wrong.”
