Lady Wolverines’ Katie Bodenmiller named Offensive Player of the Year

CCAA Central All-Stars honored

The Westfield/Brocton Lady Wolverines had one of the most monumental seasons in program history in 2019, capped off by a CCAA Central league title and a Section VI co-championship banner. Naturally, the Lady Wolverines were well-represented on the CCAA Central All-Stars released earlier this week.

Leading the way on the division’s honors for the Lady Wolverines was Katie Bodenmiller of Westfield. A year ago, Bodenmiller spent the season away from the team, but she announced her presence once again as a senior this year. Bodenmiller led the league in scoring with 15 goals, 12 assists and 42 total points, which ranked in the top 30 in Section VI, regardless of class size. Her ability to score and set up teammates helped the Lady Wolverines take the next step to earn a spot in the Sectional final.

Bodenmiller had a pair of teammates join her on the First Team All-Stars. Another addition to this year’s Lady Wolverines team, sophomore Sheala Barresi, joined Bodenmiller as a First Team selection, finishing second on the Lady Wolverines with 13 goals and 30 points on the season. Her speed provided the Lady Wolverines with a new element to its offense this season, especially with Bodenmiller’s ability to get the ball to her to set up solid scoring opportunities. Senior co-captain Laura Johnston of Brocton was also a First Team All-Star, after leading the Westfield/Brocton defense as the unit’s center back. Time and time again, when the opposition would send the ball into dangerous territory, it was Johnston who cleared the ball out of her team’s zone.

The Lady Wolverines also had a trio of Second Team All-Stars in the league’s honors, highlighted by a pair of young newcomers and a force between the pipes. Eighth grader Makena Barresi and freshman Haleigh Dellow each earned Second Team recognition in their first season on the varsity team and both will look to build upon that success in the coming years. However, the league surprisingly named Lady Wolverines star goalkeeper Angel Busch to the Second Team All-Stars, rather than the First Team. Busch was the league’s winningest goalkeeper in 2019, with a 13-2 record in the regular season overall and 10-2 in league games. She only allowed seven goals on the season, never more than two goals in a game, and posted 10 shutouts in the regular season, including eight in league games. She also had a pair of shutouts to begin the postseason, and did not allow a goal through four overtime periods in the Sectional title game against Frewsburg, before an eventual defeat in the second round of penalty kicks. Busch joins fellow Westfield goalkeeper Mike Johnson, who was also shockingly left off the First Team All-Stars in the CCAA Central boys soccer honors, which were announced last week.

The league also had plenty of other local names receiving First Team and Second Team honors. Silver Creek/Forestville had senior midfielders Jaylah Cossin and Chloe Barrett each selected to the First Team, while Chautauqua Lake junior leading scorer Calla Zarpentine made the First Team. A pair of goalkeepers made the First Team in North Collins’ Myah Gabel and Pine Valley’s Haley Campbell, along with North Collins senior Maddy Turnbull.

Chautauqua Lake’s Alexis Jacobson and Pine Valley’s Delanie Tunstall each made the Second Team All-Stars, as did the North Collins duo of Becky Holmes and Robin Hidy. Silver Creek/Forestville’s Jade Bouvier and Rachael Beadle both made the Second Team, as well.

The complete list of the league’s honors is listed below:
