BEMUS POINT — The Fredonia Lady Hillbillies dropped a close game to the Maple Grove Lady Red Dragons on Tuesday night, losing 45-40 at Maple Grove High School.

“We got a little spark in the third,” said Fredonia coach Dan Vona. “But we were a little sluggish tonight. Maybe it was the off day yesterday, knowing they’d have a game today, but that’s no excuse. We had a lot of sloppy passes.”

The Lady Red Dragons (11-8, 7-4) led 28-16 at the half, but Fredonia (11-8, 6-5) had a strong third quarter, outscoring Maple Grove 13-5 to only trail by four heading into the final quarter. Fredonia was even able to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hang on to close out the victory.

Fredonia was led by Anna Buchanan, who scored 13 points, while Kazlin Beers had 10, and Nagely Vazquez had 11 boards and four blocks.

Maple Grove’s Anna Tranum led the way for them with 22 points.

Fredonia has one game remaining before the playoffs begin next week, as they’ll host the Panama Lady Panthers at Fredonia High School on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., in what Vona described as “a tough one.”
