Records fall at swimming & diving championships

OLEAN — The area’s top high school boys swimmers didn’t disappoint at the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Championships on Saturday at Olean Middle School.

In fact, it was a record-setting day.

Kyle Dean of Jamestown, Gannon Moore of Frewsburg/Southwestern, and RJ Helt and David Marshall of Panama all posted individual pool records; and Jamestown’s 200-yard freestyle quartet of Dean, Jacob Anderson, Joseph Roehmholdt and Aidan McCleery set a new pool and CCAA relay mark.

Meanwhile, the Bears comfortably captured the team title with 482 points, followed by Jamestown with 300, Olean with 198, Panama with 146, Dunkirk with 145 and Fredonia with 100.

Dean, the recipient of the Ollie Kohler Memorial Swimmer of the Meet award, won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.58 and the 100 freestyle in a pool record-setting time of 47.63, breaking the old mark of 48.0. He was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley and 200 freestyle relays with times of 1:44.71 and 1:30.88 respectively. Joining Dean in the relay wins were Conner Dean, Joseph Roehmholdt and Jacob Anderson in the 200 medley relay; and Anderson, Roehmholdt and Aidan McCleery in the 200 freestyle relay. The time in the 200 freestyle relay broke the old pool record of 1:32.74 and the CCAA mark of 1:31.50.

Moore was the winner in the 200 individual medley (2:05.37) and the 100 backstroke (55.24) and joined Zachary Gifford, Logan Hren and Brady Lindstrom on the victorious 400 freestyle relay (3:27.82). Moore’s time in the backstroke broke the old pool mark of 55.38.

Finally, Helt touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle (1:48.70) and the 100 butterfly (56.42), the former time breaking the old pool record of 1:50.87; and Marshall set a new 11-dive pool record of 477.95, eclipsing the previous mark of 474.25.

Other first-place finishes went to Hren in the 500 freestyle (5:13.67); and Lindstrom in the 100 breastroke (1:05.78).
