Fredonia knocks off Dunkirk in softball

The Fredonia Hillbillies softball team improved its record to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West by defeating the Dunkirk Marauders, 6-2, on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.

Dunkirk falls to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.

“We saw three veteran pitchers show off their experience tonight,” said Fredonia coach Jesse Beers.

For Fredonia, Marissa Cash started in the circle. She pitched a strong 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and one earned run, while striking out two. Madison Marsh came on in relief and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one hit, one unearned run and registering two strikeouts.

For Dunkirk, senior Ashley Gotowka turned in another solid performance, coming off a nine-inning game Monday at Gowanda where she turned in a 114-pitch, 11-strikeout performance. In fact, only one run of the six was earned yesterday, and that was the difference in the game. The Lady Marauders committed four errors and it seemed like Fredonia was able to take advantage of every one of them.

Scoring started in the bottom of the first for Fredonia. Jordan Lucas blooped a two-out single just over the second baseman’s head, scoring Marsh and Erin Schrantz, making it 2-0 after one. In the fourth inning, the Marauders had back-to-back extra-base hits to bring it to a one-run game. It started with a triple by Gina Salerno and then an RBI double by Rachel Glowniak. Dunkirk almost tied the game when Alyssa Salerno ripped a line drive, but Erin Schrantz made a leaping catch to save a run.

When Fredonia needed to make a defensive play, they made one, getting themselves out of multiple jams as a result. In fact, Dunkirk outhit Fredonia 7-4 for the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, Fredonia got one run back when Sophia Gullo scored an unearned run making the score 3-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Fredonia tallied three runs on three hits to improve its lead to 6-1.

Dunkirk scored its final run on a line-drive triple to right field by Rachel Glowniak, driving in Angelina Piede. Marsh was able to shut it down from there.

Fredonia will play Thursday at Jamestown, while Dunkirk will be home against Southwestern.
