Yudin tosses 1-hit gem for Blue Devils

If it was the final collegiate pitching appearance for Fredonia State’s Katie Yudin, she saved her best for last.

The fifth-year right hander tossed a one-hit shutout Wednesday as the Blue Devils (9-11 overall, 9-7 SUNYAC) swept Oswego State, 12-8 and 7-0, to keep their SUNYAC playoff hopes alive. They began the day needing a sweep combined with a split Thursday between Geneseo and Brockport.

Should they get in, the Blue Devils will travel to Cortland to play the Red Dragons in a best-of-three series Saturday.

Yudin (5-3) held the Lakers hitless until Leah Czerwinski doubled to left field with two outs in the sixth inning. Offensively, Fredonia State took command with six runs in the third inning. The uprising included an RBI single by Syd Merkley, a sacrifice fly by Yudin, and RBI doubles by Nicole Kumro and Maria Caviris.

Yudin also earned a save in the opener, her second of the year, as the Blue Devils rallied from a 7-2 deficit with a six-run fourth. Delana Thomas got the big inning started — just as she did in the six-run third in Game 2 — with a lead-off single. Amber Piniewski bunted safely, one of her three hits, and Merkley brought the first run home with a single, her first of three RBI.

A pinch-hit single by Evelyn Webster and an Oswego throwing error accounted for the next two runs. Alex Brizendine then doubled to score two more and tie the game at 7-7. The second Oswego error brought home the sixth run and put the Blue Devils on top, 8-7. They added a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth as Merkley (double), Kumro, and Piniewski had RBI hits.

Maria Caviris (2-1) picked up the win with one-third of an inning work in relief of starter Emily Chelius. Yudin worked the final three innings, yielding one run on three hits.

Fredonia State’s sweep was the first over Oswego since April 11, 2015, and the first sweep of the Lakers at home since April 18, 2010.
