Dunkirk walks off winners vs. Gowanda
Glowniak plays hero in seventh
DUNKIRK — Rachel Glowniak drove in the tying run and then circled the bases for the winning run as Dunkirk defeated Gowanda 3-2 in nonleague softball Monday evening.
Trailing 2-1, Olivia Corbett led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single. Glowniak followed with a double to left field and on a throwing error, scored the winning run.
What made it more special for the Marauders was that they were celebrating Senior Night for Ashley Gotowka, Rosa Pacheco, Corbett, Glowniak and Gina Salerno.
“I was definitely confident,” Dunkirk head coach Michelle Gilmour said about Corbett and Glowniak batting in the final inning. “It was their Senior Night. I knew they were excited and I was happy to see the leadership from them.”
Gotowka threw a five-hitter with a walk and 11 strikeouts.
The game was 0-0 entering the sixth inning.
The Panthers’ Zoey Kota doubled and scored to give her team a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth before Gotowka picked up her 100th strikeout of the season to end the frame.
In the bottom of the inning, Alyssa Salerno reached on an error and moved up on a Courtney Zatorski groundout before Gina Salerno hit an RBI single to tie the game for the Marauders (5-3, 3-2 CCAA D1 West).
Gowanda took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh as Hailey Fort singled and eventually scored on a grounder by Abby Valone.
Addison Kota threw a four-hitter with two strikeouts and one walk for the Panthers (3-5, 2-2 CCAA Central).
“We basically were hitting the ball right at them,” Gilmour said. “Finally our third time through the lineup, the girls made some adjustments and attacked the pitches they liked.”
