Travis has big hit in Dunkirk victory

DUNKIRK — A three-run third inning gave Dunkirk the lead for good in an 11-5 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West victory over Southwestern.

The Trojans (4-5, 4-5) led 4-0 after one inning and 5-3 after two before the Marauders (13-3, 9-1) shut them out the rest of the way.

“We kicked it around pretty good in the first inning. When it happens that early, we know we have the potential to put a lot of runs up,” Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda said. “We hung tough and came back in the first inning.”

Javy DeJesus earned the win with a complete-game six-hitter. He struck out six and only one of the five runs he allowed was earned. At one point he retired eight Southwestern batters in a row.

“He put the clamps on them until we could gain a lead,” Jagoda said. “We got our defense back together. It’s never easy. Southwestern and us have played three very good ball games this year.”

Bryson Travis went 2 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs; Donovan Lockett went 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored; DeJesus and Phil Messina each had two hits; and Mike Norton had a double for Dunkirk, which has won four games this week.

“Bryson had a huge (triple) in an 0-2 count,” Jagoda said. “He also had a really nice hit-and-run RBI single in the fifth inning.”

Nick Marsowicz reached base safely four times and Lockett doubled for the fourth straight game.

Nate Johnson had a pair of triples and Spencer Kane had two singles for Southwestern.
