Thunderbirds win Section VI D2 duals

LANCASTER — Section VI has a new Division II wrestling dual meet champion.
Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer unseated Newfane as the section’s small school champion with a 40-31 victory over Newfane in the finals Saturday at Lancaster High School.
The Thunderbirds led 30-0 after five weights before the Panthers made it 36-31. Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s John Watson secured the match with a 12-4 major-decision victory over Newfane’s Collin Doxey at 152 pounds.
The Thunderbirds started the match off with four pins from Brad Smith at 160 pounds, Jayden Malecki at 172 pounds, Mason Maring at 189 pounds and Ison Shirley at 215 pounds.
Then before Newfane battled back into the contest, Gavin Segovia earned a forfeit win at 285 pounds. Breaking up the Newfane run was Jordan Joslyn securing a pin in 23 seconds at 126 pounds.
Pioneer won the section’s first Division II team championship in 2016-17 before Falconer/Cassadaga Valley won the next three titles, including a state title in 2019-20. The 2020-21 team championships were canceled due to COVID-19 before Newfane won last year’s title.
Falconer/Cassadaga Valley came in third place this year with a 49-20 win over Southwestern in the consolation final. The Golden Cougars received pinfall victories from Hunter Caldwell at 189 pounds, Dylan Newman at 102 pounds, Gabe Lundmark at 126 pounds, Patrick Braley at 138 pounds, Austin Chase at 145 pounds and Jacob Clark at 152 pounds. Dalton Caldwell also earned a major decision victory of the Golden Cougars at 172 pounds.
The Southwestern effort was led by pinfall victories by Tavio Hoose at 215 pounds, Kenji Walters at 110 pounds and Carmine Calimeri earned a technical fall at 118 pounds.
