Dunkirk’s season ends with 2-0 loss at Depew
DEPEW — Dunkirk fell behind 2-0 in the first inning Thursday.
As it turned out, that deficit was too much to overcome.
The third-seeded Marauders managed just one hit — a second-inning single by Greg Orcutt — and lost to No. 2 Depew 2-0 in a Section VI Class B1 semifinal at Depew High School.
Eric Woodley threw a complete game and struck out 14 for the Wildcats, who will take on No. 9 Iroquois in Saturday’s noon final at Grand Island High School. The Chiefs beat No. 4 Maryvale 6-4 in Thursday’s other semifinal.
Depew’s first-inning runs came home on RBI singles by Woodley and Anthony Weber.
Tyler Karin went six innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out four.
Weber went 2 for 3 for the Wildcats.
Brady Corbett, Karin and Waldemar Morales played their final game for the Marauders.
“I can’t say enough about the example our seniors gave throughout the entire season,” Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda said. “I’m hoping that the impression they made to the younger guys sticks with them for next season and beyond.
“We played as a team as our slogan of All Heart One Beat truly defined our season,” Jagoda added.
