PANAMA — Westfield’s Carter Russo hit a pair of 3-pointers during a 17-9 first quarter and the Wolverines never trailed after that en route to a 57-48 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West boys basketball victory over Panama on Thursday night.

Carson Swanson led the Wolverines (2-1, 1-0) with 21 points, but five teammates scored at least 6 points apiece.

“There was balanced scoring. The game plan was to try and get the ball out of Carson’s hands and let the other guys beat us,” Panama head coach Ed Nelson said. “A lot of their guys hit some mid-range shots. The role guys definitely knocked some shots down.”

Westfield led 24-21 at halftime before a 6-0 run to start the third quarter.

“The run to start the third quarter set us back a little back,” Nelson said. “We clawed back but didn’t get close or take a lead.”
