Defense lifts Randolph to 61-30 win over Silver Creek

RANDOLPH — Randolph jumped out to a 20-6 lead after the first quarter and rolled to a 61-30 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 East boys basketball victory over Silver Creek on Friday night.

Kevin McElwain scored 19 points; Drew Hind added 16 points, six rebounds, five steals and six assists as the Cardinals ran their record to 3-0.

“The biggest state was our team defense,” Cardinals coach Kevin Hind said. “We followed the game plan exactly.”

That meant keeping a close eye on Black Knights’ star Ray Cortes, who was held mostly in check and finished with 13 points.

“Our goal was to not give up anything easy to Cortes,” Hind said. “We started witha 1-3-1 and we just never left it, and it was just really good.”

Randolph’s perimeter shooting was good, too, as it hit 11 3-pointers.
