Falconer starts quickly at Brocton

BROCTON — Falconer rebounded from an 0-3 start to the season in dramatic fashion Friday evening.

Behind a 20-0 first quarter, the Golden Falcons rolled to a 60-14 win over Brocton in a nonleague girls basketball game to give head coach Emma Steele her first varsity victory.

Falconer (1-3) jumped ahead 5-0 on a 3-pointer and a layup, each by Augustine Krenzer, within the first 90 seconds of action. The Falconer advantage tripled to 15-0 after a jumper from the free-throw line by Nazariah Neal banked off the glass and in with 2:35 left to play in the quarter.

Krenzer later extended the lead to 20-0 with a 3-pointer with 1:02 remaining to conclude the scoring in the period. The Bulldogs did not score in the first quarter.

Brocton (0-5) finally got on the board with a 3-pointer by Colie Bundy with 5:25 left in the second quarter. At that point, Falconer led 24-3. After eight of the final 10 points of the first half, the Golden Falcons’ advantage grew to 32-5 at the break.

Bundy hit her second 3-pointer of the game within the first minute of the second half by banking it off the glass. At that point, she had six of the eight Brocton points. Falconer, however, still held a 32-8 lead.

Bundy hit her third 3-pointer of the game with 3:15 left in the third quarter to cut the Falconer lead to 38-11. The score after three quarters of play was 42-11.

Over the first half of the fourth quarter, Falconer outscored Brocton 11-0 for a 53-11 lead.

Bundy’s fourth 3-pointer of the game came with 1:19 left in the final period. Bundy accounted for 12 of the 14 Brocton points in the game.

Krenzer led the Golden Falcons with 19 points and five assists to go along with seven rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Ellyson Baglia had 8 points and eight rebounds; Neal had 8 points; and Ashley Smith had eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

SHERMAN OVERCOMES

SLOW START

ELLERY — Sherman improved to 2-0 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West play with a 40-28 win over Maple Grove.

Kelsey Wagner led the Wildcats (4-1) with 15 points. Madison Emory had 9 points; Teagan Gratto had eight rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots; and Tayden Persons had eight rebounds.

The Red Dragons (2-1, 0-1) led 8-5 after the first quarter, but Sherman took command with a 13-4 second quarter.

Claire Price led Maple Grove with 9 points to go along with eight rebounds, while Bryanna Cornell grabbed 11 rebounds.

HOAK’S 3 WINS IT FOR HAMBURG

WEST ELLICOTT — Hamburg’s Maddie Hoak hit a late 3-pointer to give the Bulldogs the lead and they hung on late for a 60-57 nonleague win over Frewsburg at Southwestern Central School.

The Bears missed an attempt at a tying 3-pointer and got the offensive rebound, but were unable to turn it into points at the end of the game.

Hoak led Hamburg with 24 points and Leah Khuu added 14.

Frewsburg was led by Ava Jimerson with 20 points and 12 rebounds; Jadyn Trocki had 16 points, six rebounds, five steals and five assists; and Teghan Trocki added 15 points, four steals and three assists.

WOLFE SHINES FOR WARRIORS

SALAMANCA — Bella Wolfe had 16 points, 11 rebounds and five steals to lead Salamanca past Pine Valley 47-25 in nonleague play Thursday.

Karina Crouse had 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Lezly McComber added 10 points, five steals and two blocke shots for the Warriors (3-0), who led 14-6 after the first quarter.

Sarah Kruszka and Danielle West each had 6 points for the Panthers (0-2).
