Five 1,000-point scorers, including three of their program’s all-time leaders and Chautauqua County’s all-time leader on the girls’ side, got together under the same roof Wednesday for the 2024 Exceptional Senior All-Star game at SUNY Fredonia’s Dods Hall.

Twenty-two of the county’s top girls were split into two teams; Team 1 led by Carol Zirkle and Jesse Zenns, and Team 2 coached by Jeff Collver and Jamie Sposato.

“This is my first time as the head coach. It’s great to see and hang out with girls that you see play throughout the county,” Collver said postgame. “I was really impressed with the quality of their character and what great kids they were.”

“It’s nice to have kids from all different leagues who have maybe never seen each other, get to play together,” Zirkle added. ” … A lot of these girls won’t play in college … so this will be their last formal basketball.”

Thirty-one boys were also split into two squads; Team 1 coached by Chris Dole and Devin Pope, and Team 2 coached by Mark and Kyle Petersen.

GIRLS GAME

Westfield’s Tanleigh Bestine, her school’s all-time leading scorer who is bound for St. John Fisher in the fall, was named the Most Valuable Player of the girls game after scoring 18 points in a 55-49 victory.

“I got to see her a couple of games this year,” Zirkle said, “and she put on that show every time.”

Fredonia’s Ashlynn Delcamp, who did not make a 3-pointer in either of her last two seasons with the Hillbillies, made one with 2:32 left in the third quarter Wednesday to give her team a 39-34 lead – at the time, their largest of the game. She finished with 9 points.

“I coached her as a modified player, so that was a lot of fun to see that,” Zirkle said. “To be able to coach her again after four years and to coach my niece (Elise Riedesel) was just a fun experience.”

Southwestern’s Reece Beaver, bound for Daemen University in the fall, scored 10 first-half points for Team 2 before leaving at halftime for the Best of Buffalo all-star game. Beaver, whose Trojans advanced to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B final four last weekend, ended her high school career with a county-record 2,463 points.

“It would’ve been great to have her the whole game,” Collver said. “What a career. I just thanked her for letting us be a part of it at the tail end. It was great to be a part of what she’s accomplished.”

Clymer’s Alexys Neckers, who also eclipsed 1,000 career points this season and will play her home games inside Dods Hall for the Blue Devils in the fall, had 8 points for the winners.

“I thought Alexys Neckers … and all the girls … who shined all season were able to step up and shine again tonight,” Zirkle said.

Alyson Canfield, who reached 1,000 career points at Jamestown this season, led Team 2 with 18 points, including five 3-pointers.

“You can definitely tell where she played,” Collver joked about the Red & Green’s style of offense under head coach Ken Ricker. “She’s a competitor. She wants to win. She kept asking me about plays to free her up for 3-pointers.”

BOYS GAME

Fredonia’s Davion White hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter, the second from way beyond the arc, as Team 2 pulled away from Team 1 for a 63-58 win in the boys game.

White hit another 3-pointer shortly thereafter and Jose Pratts scored on a putback en route to an 11-0 run.

White finished with 15 points and was named the Most Valuable Player of the boys game.

Jamestown’s Bishop Butts scored 8 points during a 12-0 run that came up short to end the game for Team 1.

Butts finished with 12 points to lead Team 1, while Maple Grove’s Nathan Cresanti added 10.

Frewsburg’s Gavin Smith, who became the Bears’ all-time leading scorer this season, ended his high school career with a 9-point night.

3-POINT CONTESTS

Southwestern junior Bella Sirianni went 9 for 15, but lost to Frewsburg junior and 2022 defending champion Teghan Trocki, who went 10 for 15, in the underclassmen’s 3-point shooting contest at halftime of the girls game.

“I’ve been fortunate to watch Teghan for a lot of years and to be around her,” Zirkle said of Trocki, who is her niece. “All the shooting she does all summer and all year-round … her team may not practice on Saturday and Sunday, but she’s practicing, putting all of those extra shots up. It’s nice to see it pay off all season, and tonight, too.”

Westfield junior Carson Swanson won the underclassmen 3-point shooting contest at halftime of the boys game. Swanson and Southwestern junior Chase Hartnett both went 12 for 15 in the finals before Swanson made 11 to Hartnett’s 10 in a tiebreaker. Jamestown sophomore Dominic Gonzalez went 12 for 15 in the first round and Fredonia sophomore RJ Koopman made 13 in a tiebreaker after the first round.

NOTES: Westfield’s Carter Russo and Forestville’s Autumn Whitcomb did not play in the games due to injuries. Frewsburg’s Paige Whippo, Forestville’s Ethan Ecker and Cassadaga Valley’s Hunter Johnson also did not play.
