Dunkirk softball upends Jamestown
Cassidy Donisi tossed a three-hitter, struck out nine and issued one walk to spark Dunkirk to an 11-2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Division 1 West softball victory over Jamestown on Tuesday.
Donisi was also the beneficiary of a five-run first inning.
Leading the way offensively for the Marauders (1-2, 1-1) were Brooke Szymczak (double) with three hits, and Donisi, Aaliyah Morales and Emma Ahlstrom with two hits apiece. Eighth-grader Eliza Bautista collected her first varsity hit as well.
Alyson Canfield had two hits for the Red & Green (0-2, 0-2).
GRUBER LIFTS HORNETS
FORESTVILLE — Behind the strong pitching of Megan Gruber, Forestville ran its record to 2-0 with a 9-4 nonleague victory over Cattaraugus-Little Valley.
Gruber struck out 12 and scattered six hits, and received offensive support from Carilene Sliwa (two doubles, RBI) and Jade Work (two singles, RBI).
For the Timberwolves (1-2), Madison Rogan (triple) and Riley Preston both had two hits.
JOHNSON, EAGLES BLANK WOLVERINES
WESTFIELD — A two-run first inning was plenty for Chautauqua Lake, which rode the right arm of Cayzlee Johnson to a 5-0 shutout of Westfield in Division 2 West action.
Johnson threw a complete-game seven-hitter with 12 strikeouts and just one walk. She also went 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs for the Eagles (2-1, 2-0).
Jillian Miller and Lucy Gates had the only other hits off Westfield starter Eva Gnadzinski, who tossed a six-hitter with five strikeouts and four walks.
Drew Ernewein had two doubles and Gnadzinski had two singles for the Wolverines (2-2, 2-1).
