Fredonia State baseball winning streak at 4 games

The Fredonia State baseball team extended its win streak to four games with 10-4 and 5-4 wins over visiting Hilbert College on Monday. Christian Pagano connected for a two-run home run in Game 1, his third in as many games. Alex Gannon added a two-run blast of his own in the opener.

In Game 1, Brady Ventura led off the bottom of the first with a double, and one out later, Pagano hit his sixth round-tripper of the year. Gannon would later drive in Tyler Curtis with an RBI single to stake the Devils to a 3-0 lead. Curtis would finish the day 3 for 3 with a double.

Leading 3-1, the Devils put up five in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth to put the game away.

Michael Byrns was credited with the win, going 4 1/3 innings without allowing a hit. He struck out six, walked a pair and hit a batter. David Adams entered the game when the Devils led 3-1. He came in with two runners on and struck out a pair to work out of the jam.

Adams would go 2 2/3 giving up three runs and striking out four for his second save of the year.

Pagano, Ventura and Gannon each had two hits apiece.

Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning of Game 2, Fredonia State loaded the bases with nobody out, but could only muster one run. However, that run proved to be the game-winner when Max Koller grounded out to plate Ventura, who had led off the inning with a hit by pitch.

Nick Syposs, who came on in relief of starter Owen Ludwig, picked up the win. Syposs went 3 2/3 innings, striking out four and allowing two runs, one earned, and did not walk a batter.

AJ Roach drove in a pair of runs, as the Devils also used three Hilbert errors to their advantage. Ethan Behnke and Kyle Tedford had two hits apiece.

Hilbert dropped to 19-12 on the season.

The Fredonia State baseball team took a pair of games at Pitt-Greensburg last Sunday by scores of 11-5 and 18-7. Christian Pagano homered in both games and drove in seven, and Garrett Stuckey had a pair of doubles and drove in six runs.

The day did not start well for the Blue Devils as Greensburg scored three times in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1 off starting pitcher Morgan Zientara. Zientara would settle in and not allow a run over the next three innings, giving the Fredonia State bats a chance to work their way to a 5-3 lead after four complete innings.

Greensburg then greeted reliever Joe Tobia with a pair of runs to tie the game at 5-all in the bottom of the fifth.

After a scoreless sixth for both teams, the Devils exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh, and Tobia would finish the game with a scoreless seventh and get the win. A one-out home run by Pagano put the Devils up 7-6 before tacking on five more runs.

Stuckey had four hits, including a double, and four RBIs. Pagano and Gannon each drove in three apiece.

Starting pitcher Peyton Ahlstrom was the beneficiary of a seven-run first inning before he would even take the mound in Game 2. The Devils would have another big inning in the third, tacking on six more for a 13-1 lead.

Ahlstrom took the win, going five innings, striking out five and giving up four runs, all earned. Alexander Needham finished the game with two innings of relief, giving up one unearned run.

Roach was 3 for 3 with four runs scored. Pagano was 2 for 4 with four RBIs, while Zachary Richards was 2 for 2 with a double.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

The Fredonia State women’s lacrosse team routed the Potsdam Bears 20-5 to pick up a SUNYAC win on Senior Night last Saturday.

Senior Sydney Buchko turned in an impressive game, leading the Devils with five goals, three assists and eight draw controls. In addition, Buchko also earned her 100th career point finding Cailin Karalus for the assist late in the second quarter.

The Devils scored three times inside the first minute and would jump out to a 7-1 lead. Halftime saw the Devils up 13-3.

The second half was all Fredonia State, too, as it outscored the Bears 7-2.

Jessica Kowalski made nine saves and gave up five scores for the Devils.

Noelle Mendaez added four goals and an assist, and the Karalus sisters — Megan and Cailin — scored three apiece.

Potsdam was led by Lindsey Ladue with three goals.

The Blue Devils concluded their 2024 season with a 23-1 loss to SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday. The Knights manufactured a 16-goal lead by intermission and secured the 22-goal victory by the final horn.

The Devils recorded four shots on goal and won 12 draw controls against the Knights.

Noelle Mendez led the Devils with one goal, one groundball and three draw controls. Buchko added four draw controls and Megan Karalus added two groundballs as well.

In goal, Kowalski and Ashleigh Manns combined for three saves. Geneseo had 12 different players record a goal with Emily Salanger finishing with a game high four goals.

The Devils wrap up the 2024 season with an overall mark of 5-11 and 1-8 in the SUNYAC.

SOFTBALL

After falling 1-0 in extra innings in Game 1, the Fredonia State offense exploded for 14 runs and took Game 2 by a 14-5 score against Brockport on Tuesday. Emily Chelius was the tough-luck loser in the opener, striking out 10 before allowing a run with two out in the bottom of the eighth. She homered in Game 2 to pace the offense.

Fredonia State is now 6-6 in the SUNYAC, putting them in the sixth-and-final playoff spot. The Blue Devils hold the tiebreaker over the four teams trailing them, with Brockport right behind them in seventh at 2-6. They are tied with Oneonta (6-4) and Geneseo (6-2) in the win column.

Chelius did all she could in Game 1, but was matched pitch-for-pitch by Brockport’s Kendall Phillips. Chelius scattered four hits and whiffed 10, while Phillips allowed four hits and struck out six.

Brockport’s Emma DeJesus singled home Olivia Simone for the game-winner.

Allie Wandell had two hits and two stolen bases for the Devils.

Down 2-1 after the first inning in Game 2, the Devils scored 10 unanswered runs in the second and third innings to cruise to the victory.

Megan Guidry and Wandell drove in three apiece, and Chelius plated two runs. Avery Hill added a double.

Vanessa Galbraith took the win, going 3 2/3 innings, giving up five runs. Madison Lowe finished the game with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless pitching.

The Golden Eagles were paced by Kellie Gentile with three hits.

Freshman Madison Lowe — who homered earlier in the game — delivered the big hit in a three-run seventh as the Fredonia State softball team overcame a two-run deficit to win Game 2, 7-6, over Oswego on Saturday. The Devils were 13-8 winners in Game 1.

The Devils led 6-2 after two innings in Game 1, but the pesky Lakers would come back to tie the game at 8-all in the top of the sixth. Fredonia State then took control in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five times.

With the game tied, Alyssa Santiago delivered the go-ahead hit with a two-run single. The Devils tacked on three more before the end of the game.

Chelius and Santiago led the Devils with two hits, and Lowe scored three times.

Down 6-4 to start the seventh in Game 2, Erin Cunningham led off the inning with a double. After one out, Hill doubled home the first run. Madison Devore walked.

Wandell then ripped a single that hit the left-field line, plating Hill. Devore and Wandell each moved up on the throw to the plate. Lowe connected on a single to drive in the winning run.

Jordan Kanick picked up the win with 1 2/3 innings of relief without allowing a run.

Last Friday, McKenna Barry and Kim Westenber each tossed a shutout to lead Cortland to an 8-0, 6-0 doubleheader sweep of Fredonia State.

In the opening game, Barry scattered two hits and fanned one Devil batter to improve to 11-1 in the circle for the Red Dragons.

Cortland scored six runs with the help of three Fredonia State errors at the top of the second. A pair of second-inning miscues and a two-run blast from Shannon Scotto put Cortland up 4-0. Another error upped the margin to 6-0 and after a two RBI single from Tori Reich that stretched the Red Dragon lead 8-0. The game ended in five innings of play in favor of Cortland.

Wandell and Chelius registered the only hits for the Devils.

Chelius (3-4) suffered the loss for Fredonia State despite allowing only two earned runs. She gave up six unearned runs on seven hits over five innings of work.

Late runs and outstanding pitching helped Cortland to a 4-0 victory in Game 2.

After the scoreless four innings of play, Scotto doubled to drive in the first run of the game. A sacrifice fly and a two-run home run from Barry led to three more runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Westenber (6-2) tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out 11 batters to pick up the win. Fredonia State starter Vanessa Galbraith was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on nine hits in seven innings of work. Wandell, Chelius and Santaigo each recorded one hit for the Devils.
