Zentz throws 2-hitter for Dunkirk in 3-0 win

Zach Zentz threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and three walks as Dunkirk shut out Allegany-Limestone 3-0 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 baseball at Al Stuhlmiller Field on Monday.

The Marauders (7-5, 5-3) opened the scoring in the first inning when Josh Lemanski singled, stole second and scored on a Donnie Jackson RBI double.

In the fifth, Henry Leone singled and scored on a hit-and-run double by Zentz.

Dylan Bankoski singled, stole second, went to third on a Jon Ganey groundout and scored on a squeeze bunt by Leone in the sixth.

Lemanski finished with two hits, while Paul Trippy III and Ganey added singles in the Marauders’ eight-hit attack off the Gators’ Caleb Strade, who struck out seven. Bankoski stole two of Dunkirk’s six bases.

Vinny LaBella and Evan Johnson each singled for Allegany-Limestone (4-8, 0-6).

“Zentz was lights-out today,” Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda said. “Right from the start he was pretty much untouchable and he went from there.”

AUSTIN THROWS NO-HITTER

GOWANDA — Kyan Austin threw a five-inning no-hitter with five strikeouts while walking one as Gowanda shut out Randolph 12-0 in Division 3 play.

Drew Kota had three hits, an RBI and a run scored; Brayden Smith had two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored; Seth Geiger had two hits, including a double, two RBIs and two runs scored; and Carson Huch had two hits, an RBI and a runs scored for the Panthers (8-1, 7-0), who led 10-0 after two innings.

David Malone and Michael Bohall combined for three strikeouts on the mound for the Cardinals (0-10, 0-7).

TROJANS JUMP ON TOP EARLY

FREDONIA — Southwestern took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning en route to an 8-3 Division 1 win over Fredonia.

Judd Harris singled and George Marshall walked to open the game before Jameson Walsh reached on a fielder’s choice and Peter Conley walked to load the bases. Chase Kartesz then hit a two-run single to right field that turned into a 3-0 lead when courtesy-runner Austin Ribaudo scored on an error. Oscar Harris hit an RBI single and Judd Harris worked a bases-loaded walk before the inning was over for the 5-0 lead.

Walsh threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out seven and walking four. Wilson Genareo threw the final 2 2/3 shutout innings, allowing one hit and three walks with one strikeout.

Genareo had two hits for the Trojans (9-2, 6-2).

Owen Rush had two hits, including a double, while Colin Luce and Colin Crowell each added a pair of hits for the Hillbillies (7-2, 5-1). Rush struck out four and walked eight while allowing five hits in 4 2/3 innings before Luca Gullo threw the final 2 1/3 innings.

PORTVILLE TAKES SHOWDOWN

PORTVILLE — A two-run bottom of the sixth inning sent Portville past North Collins 3-1 in Division 3 play.

Ethan Obergfell scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch before Luke Petryszak scored on an RBI groundout by Nik Manroe.

Hayden Emley threw a complete-game three-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks for the Panthers (9-0, 8-0).

“I was incredibly impressed with Hayden Emley’s performance on the mound,” Portville head coach Mike Matz said. “In his first varsity start, he came out and filled up the zone.”

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Aidan DeFazio that plated Braedon Carter.

“Aidan hasn’t been hitting the way we have seen in the past, so we talked a lot about mentality and believing in your ability,” Matz said. “It was great to see him rewarded with an RBI double.”

Daniel Downes allowed just one hit while walking five and striking out three for the Eagles (8-2, 7-2).

“North Collins is a good team,” Matz said. “They are fundamentally sound and are smart.”

Asher Parnitzke, Walter Ebersole and Carson Teijeira had hits for North Collins. Teijeira scored and stole a base, while Scott Armbruster had the lone RBI.

“The last two games have been playoff intensity,” said Matz, whose Panthers beat the Eagles 3-2 on Saturday. “It’s great to see the boys make plays when they’re offered the opportunity.”

BROCTON DOWNS EAGLES

BROCTON — Michael Garcia and Aiden Gatto combined on a five-hitter and Nate Laurito collected four hits, drove in a run and scored twice to lead Brocton to a 17-6 five-inning victory over Chautauqua Lake in a Division 2 game.

Donovan St. George drove in three runs, Anthony Gatto plated a pair and Grant Gustafson collected two hits and two RBIs for the winners (3-3, 3-3).

The Eagles (4-6, 4-3) were led by Nate Henry and Devin Hewes, who each had a hit. Henry drove in two runs and Hewes drove in one.

MENDELL TOSSES GEM

ELLICOTTVILLE — Cameron Mendell threw a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts and one walk as Ellicottville blanked Cattaraugus-Little Valley 4-0 in Division 3 play.

Mendell also had a hit and two RBIs; Ryan Norton had two hits and a run scored; Parker John and Sean Crowley each had a hit and a run scored; and Rylan Benjamin had a hit, a run scored and an RBI for the Eagles (3-5, 2-5).

Nate Wolf struck out six in five innings for the Timberwolves (1-8, 0-7). DJ Szata doubled, while Wolf and Matt Benzel each added a hit.

WOLFPACK PULLS AWAY

CLYMER — Clymer/Sherman/Panama scored six runs in the sixth inning to pull away from Pine Valley for an 11-1 nonleague victory.

Bryce Hinsdale hit a bases-clearing three-run triple, Gavin Burchanowski drew a bases-loaded walk and Grant Lictus had an RBI groundout during the six-run outburst.

Hinsdale threw three innings of no-hit ball with six strikeouts and four walks for the Wolfpack (5-2, 5-1).

Trent Ivett took the loss for the Panthers (0-8, 0-7). He struck out eight and walked six while allowing three hits in five innings.

Tate Catanese and Burchanowski each had two hits for Clymer/Sherman/Panama.

OLEAN TOPS GOLDEN FALCONS

OLEAN — Olean led 6-1 after two innings and scored six more runs in the fifth to beat Falconer 12-2 in Division 1 action.

The Huskies improved to 4-4 overall and 4-1 in the league.

The Golden Falcons fell to 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the league.
