Calph, Tofil tie at North Hills Golf Course

CORRY, Pa. — The Wednesday Travel League was fortunate to avoid any major storms during this week’s event at North Hills Golf Course.

Robert Calph and Ed Tofil tied for the low round of 78, with Calph the overall winner on a tiebreaker. Josh Hilliker and John Waterman tied for third with 82s. Calph led the front nine with an even-par 36 and Tofil led the back nine with 39.

In the B Flight, Tom Sacilowski was the winner after a tiebreaker with Joe Dunning, who made his Wednesday Travel League debut with a bang. Dunning is the first player in league history to make an eagle on his very first hole played, eagling hole No.1. Don Kujawa was the C Flight champion. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Joe Bifaro.

Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight — Dave Wallace (No. 4), Calph (Nos. 5, 6), Dave Criscione (No. 7) and Hilliker (No. 11); B Flight — Joe Dunning (No. 1, eagle), Sacilowski (Nos. 4, 10), Pete Pinkoski (No. 5), Phil Hopkins (No. 12) and Dave Franklin (No. 16); C Flight — Mick Dunning Sr. (No. 7), Bifaro (No. 8), Lenny Leszkowicz (Nos. 10, 13), Kujawa (Nos. 11, 16) and Jack Hood (Nos. 14, 18).

Closest to the pin were Sacilowski (No. 4), Calph (No. 7), Hilliker (No. 11) and Waterman (No. 15). Winners of the Steeplechase were Hilliker (A Flight), Joe Dunning (B) and Ken Kaus (C).

Top point winners were Sacilowski (48), Hilliker (44), Calph (32) and Wallace, Criscione and Joe Dunning (24 apiece). Season points leaders (through 16 events): 1. Hilliker (545), 2. Gary Haase (266), 3. Calph (258), 4. Sacilowski (224), 5. Pinkoski (218), 6. Tofil (211), 7. Wallace (166), 8. Jeff Nelson (158), 9. Franklin (129), 10. Hopkins (127).

Lenny Leszkowicz (2,251.75 career points) broke into the top 20 on the All-Time Points List, moving past the late Dick Maggio. Tom Sacilowski went over 1,000 career points.

This week the league makes its 10th annual Ohio trip to Boardman, Ohio. On Tuesday, the league plays the “Cousin Eddie Invitational” at Reserve Run in Poland, Ohio at 11:15 a.m. On Wednesday, the league plays its regular format at Knoll Run in Lowellville, Ohio at 10 a.m. All spots are filled.

The following Wednesday, July 24, the league will be playing Rose Brook Golf Course with a 10 a.m. start. Golfers are asked to be signed up by noon of Monday, July 22.
