Fredonia tennis outlasts Westfield 3-2

Fredonia seventh-grader Elias Harper made his first varsity start in boys tennis singles action and it proved to be the decisive contest in a 3-2 victory over Westfield. Harper managed to edge Sam Heim 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6) to secure the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 win Monday.

“That decided the win,” Fredonia head coach Jake Carrol said about second singles. “Elias played strong, won the first set; was strong mentally and won 7-6 and 8-6 to seal the team win for Fredonia. It was his first start, and as a seventh-grader, he played very well and won us the match.”

Jackson Spangler secured the victory for Fredonia (1-0, 1-0) in first singles, while the pair of Sam Pietro and Nate Krakowiak defeated Grayson Mazza and Benjamin Wolfe 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) in first doubles.

Westfield (1-3, 0-2) won third doubles as Cole Tenamore topped Isaac Williams 6-2, 7-5 and the duo of Seth Zielinski and Alina Franklin won second doubles.

TROJANS SWEEP JAMESTOWN

WEST ELLICOTT — Southwestern secured a 5-0 sweep against Jamestown in Division 1 action.

Chase Haaksma and Nolan Lefler earned singles wins for the Trojans. Then in doubles, Miles Moore and Gavin Ternullo, Matthew Persia and Calvin Gesing and Sam Livingston and Hunter Smith cleaned up the competition.
