RUSH — There was once again just three girls to shoot par or better at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association golf championships at Wild Wood Country Club on Monday.
Unfortunately for Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove’s Jocelyn Wintersteen, she was not among those three after doing so in the first round on Sunday. Instead, the sophomore fired an 83 to go along with her 72 and finished tied for 11th in the state.
Wintersteen had a massive improvement from her first two trips to states, jumping up 46 spots and improving her overall score by 25 strokes with a two-round score of 155. She will have plenty to look forward to next season, especially after being in contention at the end of the first round.
Ursuline’s Nina Choe of Section I was the only golfer to shoot under par on both days, improving from her first round 70 with a 4-under at 68 to claim the state championship.
Hayden Knapp of South Glens Falls-II finished seven strokes back after shooting even par and Delaney Abel of Corning/Painted Post-IV took third 10 strokes back at 148.
Jamestown senior Nilla Ecklof cracked into the top 50 with a total score of 178 that earned 49th in the state.
