Wednesday Travel League travels to Concord Crest GC
EAST CONCORD — The Wednesday Travel League played a Ryder Cup singles match format in this week’s event at Concord Crest Golf Course.
Trailing 5-4, Team Europe captain Joe Bifaro won the final match against Team USA captain Jim Ellman Sr. to bring the final score to 5-5. For the tiebreaker, total team strokes were counted. Team Europe was the winner over Team USA by two strokes, 898 to 900.
Following are the match results: Match 1, Josh Hilliker (EUR) tied Ed Tofil (USA); Match 2, Jeff Nelson (USA) 5&3 over Mike Schwertfager (EUR); Match 3, Dave Wallace (EUR) 2&1 over Joe Michalski (USA); Match 4, John Waterman (EUR) tied Adam Gornikiewicz (USA); Match 5, Tom Destro (EUR) 2 up over Phil Hopkins (USA); Match 6, Mike Willoughby(EUR) 3&2 over Dave Franklin (USA); Match 7, Pete Pinkoski (USA) 3&1 over Tim Walawender (EUR); Match 8, Gary Haase (USA) 6&5 over Lenny Leszkowicz (EUR); Match 9, Bob Kujawa (USA) 2&1 over Don Kujawa (EUR); and Match 10, Joe Bifaro (EUR) 2&1 over Jim Ellman Sr. (USA).
Wallace and Hilliker tied for the low scratch round with 81s. Wallace was the overall winner with a birdie on the third tiebreaker hole. Tofil finished third with 82 and also led the front nine with 39. Hilliker led the back nine with 37. Pete Pinkoski was the B Flight winner. Bifaro shot the low round by a senior. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Don Kujawa.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight, Wallace (Nos. 1, 2, 17), Hilliker (Nos. 4, 14, 16), Willoughby (No.6), Haase (No.7), Gornikiewicz (No.10) and Michalski (No.15); B Flight, Ellman (Nos. 1, 13), Walawender (Nos. 5, 8), Bifaro (No. 10), Franklin (No. 11), Pinkoski (Nos.12, 15) and Hopkins(No.14).
Closest to the pin were Hopkins (No. 3), Wallace (No. 7), Waterman (No. 11) Nelson (No. 14), and Michalski (No. 16). Winners of the steeplechase were Nelson (A Flight) and Bob Kujawa(B).
Top point winners were Wallace (49), Hilliker (39), Pinkoski (25) and Nelson and Michalski (20 apiece). Season points leaders (through 24 events): 1. Hilliker (628), 2. Tofil (448), 3. This week the league travels to The Links at Ivy Ridge in Akron. The first tee time is at 10 a.m. Golfers are asked to be signed up by 8 p.m. Sunday.
