Mays captures long jump title with Marauders

HOUGHTON — Nathan Mays captured a first place in the long jump to highlight the efforts of the local athletes at the Section VI Varsity Select No. 2 indoor track & field meet at Houghton University on Saturday.

Representing the Dunkirk team, Mays posted a winning leap of 21 feet, 4 inches. He also placed third in the pole vault, clearing 11-6.

Meanwhile, teammate Samuel Bowers finished second in the 300 meters (36.7), Jorge Rivera Jr. of Jamestown was second in the high jump (5-8) while Evan Spruce of Salamanca finished third in the shot (41-1.5) and fourth in the weight throw (42-7.75).

Other top-five results among area boys were Alexander Cramer of Fredonia fourth in the 1,000 meters (2:52.46); Xazavier Escobar of Salamanca fifth in the 55 meters (6:92) and Cameron Burgess of Jamestown fifth in the 300 meters (37.42).

Among the area girls Jordan Morris of Fredonia placed second in the weight throw (36-6.5) and teammate Mariella Russo finished tied for second in the high jump (4-10).

Other top-five results among area girls were Leah Mays of Dunkirk third in the 1,500 meters (5:19.72); Callie Draggett of Fredonia third in the shot (29-8); Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph fourth in the 4×800-meter relay (11:45.39); Hanan Mohamad Narvaez of Dunkirk fifth in the 1,500 meters (5:25.60); Fredonia fifth in the 4×400-meter relay (4:31.10); and Ryah Leeper of Jamestown fifth in the high jump (4-8).
