Athletes shine at state track qualifier

HOUGHTON — Three area indoor track & field athletes captured first-place finishes at the Section VI state qualifier at Houghton University on Saturday.

They were Beckett Lumia of Jamestown; Ethan Verbosky of Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph; and Nathan Mays of Dunkirk.

Becket won the 300 meters (35.50), Verbosky claimed the 1,000 meters (2:33.40) and Mays won the high jump (6 feet, 1 inch). Mays also finished third in the long jump (21-7) and fourth in the pole vault (12-6).

There were a host of athletes who finished in the top five in their respective events. The four second-place finishers were Ty Kraft of Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph in the 600 meters (1:23.83); Samuel Bowers of Dunkirk in the 300 meters (35.97); Jamestown’s 4×200-meter relay (1:33.17); and Falconer/Maple Grove/Cassadaga Valley/Frewsburg/Randolph’s 4×400-meter relay (3:29.86).

The other third-place finishers were Jorge Rivera Jr. of Jamestown in the high jump (6-0); Tyler Tellez of Jamestown in the pole vault (13-3); and Evan Spruce of Salamanca in the shot put (45-4).

Troy Keefe of Jamestown placed fourth in the shot put (44-8) and Clevon Wofford of Jamestown finished fifth in the 1,600 meters (4:30.96).

Among the area girls, Jordan Morris of Fredonia placed fourth in the weight throw (36-11.75) and Dunkirk’s 4×400-meter relay also finished fourth (4:17.73).
