Solid turnout for Village of Fredonia recreation programs
Fredonia’s kids are signing up for the summer recreation program in solid numbers, after trustees eyed cuts to it at budget time.
Village Recreation Department Director Kayla Sullivan — recently rehired for the job after about a year away — said at a recent Board of Trustees workshop that 326 children signed up for the program so far. It offers summer outdoor activities, traditionally supervised by older teens and college students, for children at village playgrounds and other sites.
Swim lessons had to be added to Tuesday and Thursday afternoons due to high demand for the previously existing dates, Sullivan added.
Swifties will love this tidbit: an Eras Music Night themed around Taylor Swift is coming to the Lambert Avenue Playground. Sullivan said the date is yet to be determined.
There are also tours of the Darwin Barker Museum and the Fredonia Fire Department in the works.
Mayor Michael Ferguson said he received a letter from a parent congratulating Sullivan and the village on a great summer program.
“Her kids were thrilled and I’ve heard that from more than one person this summer… I think our numbers are up significantly,” he said. Sullivan said she didn’t have 2023 statistics in front of her, but agreed program attendance is up.
However, Ferguson announced at a subsequent meeting that the program at the Gardner Street playground is canceled for the rest of the summer, due to low attendance there. Kids apparently prefer this summer to gather at the Russell Joy Park and Lambert Avenue playgrounds, where the programs will remain.
