Fredonia Rotary names its Students of the Month for April

The Fredonia Rotary Club has named its Students of the Month for April.

Sara Riforgiat is the daughter of Jon and Ronnette Riforgiat and the granddaughter of Gail and the late Anthony Bud Riforgiato and James and Patricia Lemanski. Sara has one older brother, AJ Riforgiat and is currently a senior at Fredonia High School. She has attended the Fredonia Central School District her entire life and is currently enrolled in the 3-1-3 program at SUNY Fredonia. Throughout high school, she has received the principal’s award for achieving honor roll status every quarter of her high school career and will be graduating with an Advanced Regents Diploma with distinction.

She was inducted into the National Honor Society during November of her junior year and has been nominated for many PRIDE awards by her teachers for attitude, effort, consistent achievement and being a role model to younger students. She was also accepted in the Honors program at SUNY Fredonia where she will continue her studies in the fall of 2016.

After 10 years of dance, she decided that volleyball was a sport that she enjoyed and excelled at. Sara played for 6 years and also participated on a travel volleyball team called JAVA. (Jamestown Area Volleyball Association). She had the opportunity to play with girls from two states and seven counties. Teamwork and sportsmanship were of great emphasis during practice and tournaments where she played at Penn State University as well as many clubs throughout Western New York and Pennsylvania. She also participated in track and field during her sophomore and junior years. Her high school volleyball career ended with being WDOE Athlete of the day, being named to The First Team Volleyball by the Chautauqua Cattaraugus Athletic Association and Fredonia Sports Booster MVP.

Sara is currently a volunteer at the Lakeshore Humane Society with her second family the Burmasters, Andrea and Bryan. They have been in her life since she was born and their son, Jarod, is also a senior at Fredonia Central School. He has been a second brother to her since before they could both remember and she said it is a blessing to have an extra set of parents and brothers who push you to be the best you could be.

Sara works at Reed Library on the SUNY Fredonia campus and frequently babysits in her spare time.

In the fall of 2016, she will continue her studies at SUNY Fredonia. Her educational goal is to major in chemistry and eventually earn entrance into a pharmaceutical school. With hard work and diligent studying ,she knows she can fulfill her dreams and aspirations.

Maddie Cruver is the daughter of Ronald Cruver and Cathleen Cruver. She has one sister, Sarah. She is a senior at Fredonia High School, and her mother teaches Spanish there. She has made the honor roll and won the principal’s award every quarter of high school. She also participates in the 3-1-3 program with SUNY Fredonia where she spends part of her day at the high school, then take courses at the college. She has taken English composition, novels and tales, critical thinking, and social psychology. She will be graduating with an Advanced Regents Diploma. She is also a member of the National Honor Society.

Throughout her high school experience, she has tried many different things. She played tennis her freshmen year and was a part of the swim team her sophomore and junior years. Where she found her true passion was in the theater program at her school. She has been a part of the Fredonia High School musical all four years of high school as either general ensemble or featured ensemble. Their production of “Bye Bye Birdie” was Kenny nominated and won many different awards for different areas such as costume, sets, and ensemble. It has been her honor to have been a part of such an amazing program and an experience she will definitely carry with her as she goes to college. She loved being able to work with other people to make their shows as memorable as possible. In her spare time she likes to be with friends and ride her bike.

In addition, she has been a member of the Student Council all four years of high school. Her freshmen year she was the secretary of her class, her sophomore year she was an advisor, her junior year she was a class representative, and currently she is the vice president of her class. She has enjoyed being able to plan and organize events for her class and her school. She has also loved being able to be a part of different community service activities because of the Student Council, such as Santa’s Workshop and the Fall Sweep.

For the past two summers, she has worked at a small cafe in Lily Dale called Cup a Joe. She was a barista and served baked goods to customers. She loved working there because it gave her the opportunity to learn how to make amazing coffee drinks and try some delicious food.

She has been accepted to the University at Buffalo, Ohio State University, Syracuse University, Niagara University, Allegheny College, St. Bonaventure University, and St. John Fisher College. She has decided to go to the University at Buffalo for either psychology or communications. She plans on participating in many extra curricular activities while she is in college, including theater.
