Chautauqua Lake Central School students of the month
Sara Corwin
Students of the Month at Chautauqua Lake Central School, honored for March and April achievements, are Sara Corwin, Abigail Henry, McKenna Dorman, Kira Erickson, Ian Riedesel, and Owen Reyda. The student recognition program honors students in grades 7 through 12 whose classroom performance, attitude toward learning, work ethic and extra-curricular activities set them apart.
Senior Sara Corwin
Sara Corwin is the daughter of Rob and Dana Corwin of Mayville. This year the classes she enjoys the most are Spanish and two science classes: Advanced Placement Environmental Science and Metamorphosis. Throughout high school, Sara has competed on the school soccer team. She is a member of National Honor Society, has competed on the Envirothon team, was a member of Spanish Club, and played softball as a freshman. She has been named a Rotary Scholar of the Month and a Scholar Athlete, has been chosen a Student of the Month every year since seventh grade, and is among the top ten graduating seniors. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, exercising, and eating ice cream from Big Tree Soft Serve in Lakewood. The historical person whom Sara admires most is her grandmother because “she was always positive, happy, and loving no matter the circumstances.” When asked what person she would like to be for a day, Sara chose President Trump, “so I could resign from being POTUS and have someone else step in, hopefully someone who actually believes in climate change and global warming.” After graduation, Sara will attend Penn State Behrend for two years, then transfer to the main campus, majoring in immunology and infectious disease.
Abigail Faith Henry
Abigail Faith Henry, daughter of Gary and Pam Henry of Dewittville, is a junior who says Spanish and business classes are her favorites this year. An accomplished athlete, Abbie has competed on the school’s volleyball and basketball teams since her freshman year, earning this year’s defensive MVP award for basketball and for two years being named to the varsity basketball All-Tournament team. Also this year, she was named a varsity volleyball Second Team All-Star and received a varsity basketball Honorable Mention. Abbie is also a peer mentor and an active member of both the Impact Campus Fellowship and the National Honor Society. She attended the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership conference; has been on the honor roll, and frequently the high honor roll, each quarter since she was a freshman; and this year was named a Scholar Athlete. Outside of school, Abbie is active at the West Portland Baptist Church, working in the nursery, at Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and on the worship team. She also enjoys Little League and playing the piano. In history, Abbie admires Clara Barton because “she founded the American Red Cross during the Civil War. Because of her efforts, countless lives have been saved. I, as well, like to serve others.” If she could be another person for a day, Abbie would be Candace Cameron Bure because “I’d want to see what it was like to stand strong in my beliefs while being famous.” She plans to study Business Administration in college, then earn an MBA.
McKenna Dorman
Sophomore McKenna Dorman is the daughter of Sonya Dorman of Ripley. This year, her favorite classes include French, Global Studies, and English. She has performed in the school musical for the past two years. Outside of school, McKenna enjoys participating in Upward Bound, creating art, and playing the bass guitar. In history, she admires Edgar Allan Poe because “his macabre stories were ahead of his time.” McKenna does not wish to be another person for a day because, “I am me and I need to appreciate myself, and one of the first steps in accomplishing that is only wanting to be myself.” McKenna looks forward to attending college.
Kira Elizabeth Erickson
Freshman Kira Elizabeth Erickson, daughter of Seth Erickson of Mayville and Rae Ann Anderson of Dewittwille, selects algebra as her favorite class this year. This year, Kira has competed on the soccer, basketball, and track teams. She was on the First Team All-County for track. Outside of school, Kira enjoys dancing. The historical person she most admires is Susan B. Anthony because “she fought for women’s rights.” The person Kira would like to be is Barack Obama “so I can see what it feels like to have been the coolest president out there.” Kira’s ambitions include becoming the first woman president “and saving the world.”
Ian Riesdesel
Eighth grader Ian Riedesel is the son of Connie and Craig Riedesel of Mayville. History and English are his favorite subjects this year. Ian has competed on the soccer and basketball teams since seventh grade; this year he added golf and the High School Bowl academic team. Outside of school, Ian enjoys playing soccer. He admires Winston Churchill because “he saved a lot of people.” If he could be another person for a day, Ian would want to be Bill Gates because “I would like to see the progress he has made throughout his life.” Ian plans to pursue an engineering degree in college.
Owen A. Reyda
Seventh grader Owen A. Reyda is the son of Alex and Julie Reyda of Westfield. His favorite classes are math and science. This year Owen performed in the school musical and competed on the track and field team. Outside of school, he enjoys playing the piano. He admires Isaac Newton “for delivering us from cluelessness about the solar system.” If he could be another person for a day, Owen would choose to be a famous Broadway actor to “see what it feels like to be in a Broadway show.” Owen looks forward to studying for a career as an emergency veterinarian.
