Westfield-Mayville Rotary honors five Scholars of the Month

Named as "Scholars of the Month" by the Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club at its March 19 meeting at the Lakeshore Assembly of God Church in Westfield were high school students (left to right) Laura Johnston, Brocton Central School; Patricia Dudley, Chautauqua Lake Central School; Kourtney Ames, Sherman Central School (for Jan.); Teddi Hayes, Sherman Central School; and Tyler Miles, Westfield Academy and Central School.

Five outstanding area high school students received recognition as Scholars of the Month from the Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville at its meeting held on Mar. 19 at the Lakeshore Assembly of God Church in Westfield. The honorees were Laura Johnston, Brocton Central School; Patricia Dudley, Chautauqua Lake Central School, Kourtney Ames, Sherman Central School (for Jan.); Teddi Hayes, Sherman Central School; and Tyler Miles, Westfield Academy and Central School.

Club President Mary Swanson welcomed the honorees, their relatives, school administrators and Rotarians. Following dinner, she briefly explained what Rotary is and conducted some club business. Rotarians Janese Berkhouse, Barbara Fay and Luci Petrella introduced the scholars and gave an overview of some of the students’ many accomplishments. Then Swanson presented each scholar with a framed certificate and a pen.

Laura Johnston, a Brocton Central School junior, is the daughter of Michael and Jody Johnston of Brocton. With a cumulative grade point average of 97.64%, this scholar is academically ranked second in her class. Johnston has been on the high honor roll each quarter since sixth grade. At the end of her junior year of high school, she will have completed 21.5 credits towards graduation and two Jamestown Community College courses.

Johnston has served as president of her class for the past three years; was selected to participate in the Promising Leaders Conference at SUNY Fredonia in 2018; and was chosen to attend Empire Girls State this summer. Also, she mentors a middle school student during one of her class periods. Johnston has received numerous awards. During honors night, she was recognized for having the highest GPA in many of her core classes, was the recipient of the American Legion Award in eighth grade and was recognized as middle school salutatorian. In eighth grade, she was selected for the Junior National Honor Society, in which she served as president, and for the National Honor Society in eleventh grade. She has also achieved perfect attendance during numerous quarters of her middle and high school years.

This scholar’s extracurricular activities include cheerleading, dance, band, journalism (serving as its treasurer), French club for two years, student council, Rotary Interact Cub, softball, soccer and basketball. She has served as team captain on both modified and varsity soccer, as well as varsity basketball. Her multiple soccer awards include the team sportsmanship award in 2016, second team all star in 2017, and first team all star in 2018. This year in basketball she earned character athlete award and honorable mention awards. She participates in summer league basketball, YMCA soccer leagues and travel soccer leagues.

In addition to school, sports and extracurricular activities, Johnston is CPR certified and has worked at the Brocton School fitness center since she was 16, been employed for the past two summers at the Sunflower restaurant in Lily Dale and will be working at the gift shop there this summer, and she also does some lawn mowing for her grandmother. In her spare time, Johnston enjoys working out at the fitness center, jogging, camping, traveling, reading, writing, going to church, spending time with family and friends and doing volunteer work with the Interact Club. After completing her senior year of high school, Johnston plans to attend JCC and then transfer to SUNY Fredonia. She is interested in becoming a counselor or a pharmacist.

Patricia Dudley, a Chautauqua Lake Central School senior, is the daughter of Jason and Julie Dudley of Mayville. This scholar will graduate in June with an Advanced Regents Diploma and in the top 10% of her class. Throughout her high school career, Dudley has pushed herself to take the upper level classes that earned college credit. She will graduate with 30 credits from JCC.

She has received recognition for her academic excellence in several subjects, including pre-calculus, history and English, and last year she earned the Rensselaer Medal. Dudley has been a member of the foreign language club and the High School Academic Bowl.

Outside of school, she has volunteered for the Mayville Fire Department’s holiday events and for the Salvation Army as a bell ringer during its Red Kettle Campaign. She has been employed at The Chautauquan Daily and currently works at the Lakeview Hotel / The Docks restaurant. She enjoys golfing, and she has participated on her school’s girls golf team. After graduation, Dudley plans to attend a four-year school, such as SUNY Brockport or Slippery Rock University, where she plans to major in chemistry. She intends to have a career in pharmacy or a medical field.

Kourtney Ames, a Sherman Central School senior, is the daughter of Teresa Ames of Sherman. Throughout her high school career, this scholar has received the honors award for having a GPA over 90% every quarter. She is currently academically ranked sixth in her class.

Since the fifth grade, Ames has played the flute in band. Volleyball and softball are the two sports which she has played every year, but she has also participated in basketball and cross country in previous years. Ames joined the yearbook committee in her senior year, and she is in the process of creating the senior section of the yearbook.

Ames works part time at The Patio Pizzeria, a restaurant that is run by her mother. In her spare time, Ames enjoys attending as many sports as she can to support her classmates, hanging out with her friends and listening to music. She has been accepted at Edinboro University, and is waiting to hear back from the University of Buffalo, which is her first choice. Although Ames is unsure of what career path she will take, she has decided to start by majoring in chemistry when she attends college in the fall.

Teddi Hayes, a Sherman Central School senior who resides in Clymer, is the daughter of Martha Wheeler and Russell Hayes. This scholar has always maintained a GPA of 90 or above and has received the honors award every year. She is a National Honor Society member and is the vice president of her class. She has been named student of the month three times, and has had many achievements throughout her high school years.

Sherman Central has offered Hayes a wide variety of activities in which to participate. She has played basketball for six years and volleyball for nine. She received a second team award for volleyball this year. Also, Hayes has played the saxophone in band for eight years, and she recently joined the yearbook club. She always tries to attend other school events to show support to her school.

Outside of school, Hayes enjoys traveling to different places in the world. This April she will travel to Costa Rica with her Spanish teacher. During the spring, summer and fall, she works at Chautauqua Institution. When she is not doing anything, Hayes enjoys sitting back and spending time with her family. After high school, Hayes plans to major in dentistry. She has applied to University of Buffalo, Canisius and Edinboro University. In the fall, Hayes hopes to attend UB and continue there for eight years. She hopes to first become a dentist and then an orthodontist.

Tyler Miles, a Westfield Academy and Central School senior, is the son of Bess Chimera and Ricky Miles, Jr. of Westfield. This scholar will graduate in June with a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with Mastery in Science. In addition to his high school courses, Miles has enrolled in five JCC courses. At the end of his high school senior year, he will have earned 24 college credits.

Miles is a four-year member of the senior high chorus, a member of the all-male choral ensemble Ape-men, and Westwinds, a select choral group. During his junior year, he was selected for Area All-State. Also, he participated in the steel pan ensemble and the hand bell ensemble. He was in the cast of his school’s stage productions of “Into the Woods,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “The Life and Adventure of Nicholas Nickelboy” and “Newsies.” In June of 2018, Miles was named as junior student of the month and he was elected by his peers to the position of vice president of the WACS Class of 2019.

He is a member of the varsity track and field team, runner’s club, High School Academic Bowl, drama club and environmental club and is completing an internship in an elementary classroom. Outside of school, Miles is employed by the Chautauqua Institution at the Brick Walk Cafe. He has been accepted at SUNY Albany, and in the fall of 2019, he will pursue a degree in actuarial science.
