Lake Erie Bird Club will meet Monday
Twenty-six members and guests attended the October meeting of the Lake Erie Bird Club conducted by John Ruska. Joanne Goetz, compiler, provided information on the October Buffalo Ornithological Society annual count. Fifteen members of the club participated covering areas and back yards in Northern Chautauqua County. They observed a total of 72 species with a count of 5,263 individual birds. Members shared recent sightings.
Dr. Terry Mosher presented the program, “Autumn’s Nature Calendar: Birds, Blooms, and Butterflies of Fall in Western New York.” He broke the three-month season of autumn into shorter segments of time and talked about what to look for outdoors. He stated that the period of fall is a much more relaxed pace than in the spring. Southbound migrants stay locally longer than in the spring and their feeding is more leisurely. He showed many lovely photos of a great variety of birds, blooms and butterflies that can be seen in the area in the fall. Audrey Schafer, Margaret Braun and Jennifer Grande provided refreshments for the meeting.
The next meeting of the club will be on Monday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. at BOCES, Fredonia-Stockton Road, Fredonia. Gale Verhague will present the program, “Chasing Feathers: Birding Photography in Western New York.” She will show her fantastic bird photos taken through the seasons in the local area. All are welcome.
