International Student Services Global Banquet

The Global Banquet, which raises money to support international student scholarships, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the SUNY FredoniaWilliams Center Multipurpose Room. It is open to students, faculty, staff and community members. The buffet style dinner – representative of the home countries of Fredonia’s international students – will include: tabouli salad, seaweed salad, breaded pork chop, bulgogi, vegetable curry, vegetable dumplings, vegetable tempura, tiramisu and assorted beverages. Performances by Fredonia students and a theme basket raffle will also be featured. The banquet is hosted by International Student Services and is free to Fredonia students who have a ticket. Business After Hours with the Chautauqua County and Mayville Community Chambers takes place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Chautauqua Suites, 215 W. Lake Road, Mayville. Anderson-Lee Library presents: Native American Heritage Month talk by Terry Jones

The enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians is a member of the Wolf Clan. He shares his passion for Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) history and culture through his film works. He will present a video he produced while researching historical trauma and the American Indian residential boarding school experience, and screen his short documentary “Thomas Indian School Reunion” and his yet-to-be released short film, “Savage/Future.” An audience Q & A, light refreshments and traditional Iroquois roast corn soup will follow the video screenings. Chautauqua County Board of Health meeting

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. in the HRC Building, B-14, basement level conference room, 7 N. Erie St., Mayville. Comments received from the public will be accepted as communications and not read during privilege of the floor. Audubon Holiday Cardboard Village Make-and-Take Day

“Olde Fashioned Polish Christmas” event

Doors open at 3 p.m. for the Blessed Mary Angela Holy Name Society’s celebration at the Parish Social Center on Townsend Street in Dunkirk. Tickets are $20, and limited to 250 with pre-sale tickets available at Big Ricks on Lake Shore Drive East, the 4th Ward Deli on Doughty St., or after each Mass. A sit-down Polish dinner of golumbki, kielbasa, cabbage, mashed baby red potatoes, mixed vegetables, rye bread and pumpkin pie will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. (no take-outs). Buffalo’s polka band Phocus will perform from 6 to 10 p.m. There will also be a cash bar, a basket give-away, an old-fashioned Polish sing-along and dancing all night long. Proceeds go toward the daily operations of the parish.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Dunkirk High School auxiliary gym, accessible from the back of the school. Participants must be 8 years old on April 1 and no older than 13 on April 1. Bring birth certificates. Boys will compete against boys and girls will compete against girls of the same age. Wear appropriate gym clothes and shoes. Masks and social distancing are required. The contest involves shooting foul shots. Everyone but the contestants must remain seated quietly on the bleachers.

Participants are encouraged to bring additional decorations such as small wreath frames, ribbon, wire, pruners, and holiday décor to aid in making their creation. Twelve-inch wire wreath frame available for an additional $3 at the Nature Center.

Christmas in Gowanda

Fun family activities downtown from noon to 7 p.m., train rides with Santa, movies at the Hollywood Theater, police car and fire truck rides, house decorating contest and more. Lakeshore Humane Society open adoption hours

The Lakeshore Humane Society, 431 E. Chestnut St., Dunkirk, will hold open adoption hours from noon to 3 p.m. For those who are not vaccinated, masks covering the nose and mouth must be worn at all times on the grounds of LHS. Masks are optional for those fully vaccinated. Those who are ill or have tested positive for COVID are asked to delay a visit. Tours of the facility will not be given. The 1891 Fredonia Opera House presents the screening of this opera at 1 p.m. Tickets are general admisison $20, Opera House members $18, students $10. It stars soprano Erin Morley and baritone Joshua Hopkins.
