Local author launches poetry book in Darwin R. Barker Library

Fredonia author Nick Smith will launch his new poetry book, “Cloudwalking,” in the downtown Darwin R. Barker Library on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.

Smith is a bestselling author, feature film director, actor and educator. This is his third collection of poems.

“Cloudwalking” is packed with colorful situations and characters, including a cat who rules the moon, a reluctant bride, a suicidal dentist and a woodland spirit. The book has been described as “an invitation to explore the extraordinary within the ordinary, reminding us to appreciate the small joys and fleeting moments.”

For the first time, Smith will read from the book as well as new stories and excerpts from his prose work. He’ll also be signing books and answering questions about his 30-year career as a writer and filmmaker.

Smith was born in Bristol, England. His books include the NPR-featured global hit “Milk Treading,” the anthologies “Eat Happy” and “The Secret Life of Teddy Bears,” and the art book “Fletcher Crossman: The Age of Endarkenment.” As a director, screenwriter and producer, he has over 100 movie and TV credits, including the award-winning action movie “Cold Soldiers” and the cautionary ghost tale “Fears.” He teaches at SUNY Fredonia and Jamestown Community College.
