Dunkirk Elks plan St. Joseph’s Table on March 24

St. Joseph’s Day is a feast day recognized by Catholic and Lutheran faiths, primarily by those of Sicilian or Italian heritage.

The story is told how Italy and Sicily were experiencing a devastating drought. The people prayed to God through the intercessions of St. Joseph for rain to save their crops. When their prayers were answered they gave thanks to St. Joseph through a feast of a meatless meal.

A decorated three-tiered table is the center of the celebration. The three tiers symbolize the Holy Trinity.

The table is covered with a red cloth and the top tier has a statue of St. Joseph with fresh flowers. The other two tiers have food, breads in assorted shapes, sweets, and more flowers.

Many people attend St. Joseph’s Tables, not just Italians and Sicilians. The Dunkirk Elks 922 extends an invitation to everyone to come and enjoy the many foods at their St. Joseph’s Table.

The buffet style meal is being held at the Elks Lodge located on 428 Central Ave. in Dunkirk. The event is Sunday, March 24 from noon to 3 p.m., or until sold out. The cost is $10 per person with all proceeds to benefit our local veterans. Presale tickets are available at the lodge and from Elk members. Tickets will be sold at the door if any are still available.

Please come and support our veterans.
